"Yet another bad update by Jagex!", "What's with all these rubbish updates?!". Maybe you've heard these or something like these, but most of you will certainly have come across the topic of Jagex and their updates. I'm sure the majority will start lashing out at the fact they removed the wilderness and implemented the grand exchange, but have you or any player ever just took a moment and thought about how Runescape has evolved over the years? This MMORPG is certainly appealing to the public, particularly people from the ages of 13-18, however many adults do play this game.

Jagex have made some pretty bad decisions, well that's my opinion, but who doesn't make mistakes. I mean, we're all human right? Okay, set aside that we're all obviously human and we all have flaws, some of these so called 'rubbish updates' have benefited Runescape in ways you probably never knew. For example, the wilderness update; why was it removed? It was removed due to the fact that Real-World Trading was getting out of hand. I'm going to pose a simple question to you, would you rather play a game where its currency (GP) and the currently high priced items actually meant something? A game where if you busted your back hours upon hours to receive dragon claws, or an armadyl hilt, and when you finally got it angels sang. Or do you want everything to be cheap and see everyone walking around in bandos tassets?

Ahh, bounty hunter... This was every PKers (or at least most of them if you look at the rants) worst time, with the exception of the wilderness being taken away. Bounty hunter was the new wilderness, 3 craters each for a range of levels (3-50, etc). When you killed someone with an armadyl godsword, I'm sure anyone one would scream "YES!" and when you right clicked the drop pile and selected 'take' there was a sudden drop in your heart. 180 seconds penalty... Yes that's right, in Jagexs effort to make their players happy but also prevent Real-World Trading they added a penalty if you picked something up. The only time when you wouldn't have a penalty is when you were running around with you abyssal whip and full rune looking for a fight, or if you skilfully took out your opponent who happened to be your target. This was the perfect time for all those rushers, if they killed you and you had a penalty with some pretty decent loot, it was pretty much heaven for them.

The grand exchange was something that changed the way people traded. I remember, world 2, Falador park or World 1, Varrock banks. All you would see is streams and streams of text running through your chat box, it was kind of like a market, you would go and browse whilst the different people advertised their products to you. This is all gone, because Jagex released the Grand exchange. The grand exchange is based in Varrock, you can put your items up for sale and leave it, if someone sold you/bought from you the item you would receive a notification. Pretty cool, eh? Not for many people, many disapproved of it purely for the fact that they wanted their old place of trades back. I suppose I miss the old times, but things change, and for the better. This made trading significantly easier and merchanting harder. The first time I tested the newly developed system out, I was pretty impressed, but now? Now I often think back and reminisce on the good old times.

I'm not saying that all the updates Jagex do are amazing and one hundred percent, but many of them will if not now, in the future benefit Runescape. So when Jagex releases a new mini-game, or a new skills don't straight away go to the rants section on the forums, think about it first. You never know, this new skill could be your new favourite!
