1.0 - Introduction

Zybez RuneScape Help's picture of greater conjuration portal

Runespan is a free and members Runecrafting minigame, but the higher grade of runes are only accessible to members. The aim of the minigame is to siphon runes from the surrounding environment in the Runespan. It is an alternative way to train Runecrafting, as opposed to making runes at an altar. Runespan offers faster experience than the traditional method, but offers no profit, as all rune disappear when you leave the area. However, there is a system that keeps track of the runes you have made and awards you points, which can be spent on a variety of rewards.

The Runespan was created by Wizard Finix, who believes the Runecrafting altars around Gielinor will not last forever, and a new method of obtaining runes must be found. It has become an area for the wizards of the Wizards Guild to practice a new way of continuing magic. Wizard Finix can be found inside of the Wizards Tower, standing next to the Runecrafting Guild portal. This is also where he will exchange points you have earned in Runespan for rewards.

2.0 - Gameplay

Runespan does not require you to bring anything to be able to play. Although at least 16 empty inventory spots will be useful to keep all of the runes that you make within Runespan. There are no attacking creatures, or a need for any weapons, so it is safe for all levels. Runespan also doesn't have a Runecrafting level requirement, although going in at level 1 will limit what you can do. To be able to do everything in the Runespan, 95 Runecrafting is required. There are 3 levels to the Runespan. The first level can be accessed by anyone, with any Runecrafting level and free players. The second level requires 33 Runecrafting, and the third level requires 66 Runecrafting.

Getting rune essence

In order to get started in Runespan you first need to obtain some rune essence. There are two ways of obtaining rune essence in Runespan:

  1. Upon entering to get the first batch of rune essence you must collect the floating essence which can be found on all the islands within Runespan. You can only obtain essence from the floating essence when you have less than 25 in your inventory.
  2. Siphoning from an essling, esshound, or an esswraith will use up 10 rune essence and turn it into 10 of the type of rune you were sipohing from. For example siphoning from a air essling will use up 10 rune essence, but give you 10 air runes, and 50 more rune essence, once the air essling has been fully siphoned.
Rune essence mined from the surface is not used in Runespan.

Making Runes

You can trade Wizard Finx in Runespan, points for 10 of each rune to help you get started. This makes it easier to get around Runespan when you don't have to make runes from scratch. You spend 177 points, but really it's just transferring your points to your points in inventory.

Like obtaining rune essence, there are also two ways to make runes, there are:

  1. Siphoning directly from any nodes around runespan, this will require you have rune essence, and will not reward you with any essence once the node has been fully siphoned.

Traversing Runespan

Runespan is a collection of floating islands which are joined together by platforms. To cross a platform you must have one of the correct type of runes to cross. Usually there are creatures or nodes on the island that will give you the rune that you need to cross the next platform. Crossing platforms will reduce the points in your inventory, considering you are using up runes to cross.

4.0 - Distractions & Diversions
4.1 - Yellow Wizard

Zybez RuneScape Help's Image of a yellow wizard

There are many wizards on each floor of the Runespan. They are on random islands and around every ten minutes, they teleport to another. Most wizards on the islands are wearing blue robes, but there is always one that wears yellow. The wizard that wears yellow is different for every player. After ten minutes of being inside the Runespan a player will receive a message saying a wizard is looking for help.

Zybez RuneScape Help's image of the yellow wizard message

Zybez RuneScape Help's Image of a yellow wizardTo help you with finding the wizard in yellow robes, you can talk to any of the blue robed wizards and ask where he is. You'll then be given two flashing yellow arrows which will point towards the wizard, one in your minimap and another at your feet. Players may not be able to always reach the wizard. Either they do not have the required runes to cross the platform that is needed, or they don't have the required level that is needed to cross that platform.

When you reach the wizard, you can talk to him to see what type of runes he needs. If you have at least 10 of that type of rune, use it on him to receive the XP reward. If you do not have the runes that the wizards wants, it's best to use your best type of rune on him, but make sure you have at least 10 of them for the best XP. Below level 77 it is best to give the wizard the highest rune you have; regardless of what he asks for. If he happens to ask for the highest rune you have it is more rewarding to give him your second best rune. At level 77+ it is better to give the requested rune because the bonus xp is always larger. If you do not have the runes he asks for, give him the highest runes you have.

4.2 - Runesphere

Zybez RuneScape Help's Image of a runesphereThere is also a chance that a runesphere will spawn in Runespan. It is similar in nature to the shooting star distraction and diversion, where it has different layers and the higher the layer, the higher the Runecrafting level is needed. Players must siphon from it its many layers, while getting rune dust (runespan) in the process. It will start at a certain runic level such as blood. It would require 77 Runecrafting and once it has been siphoned enough, the runesphere will go down a level to a death runesphere, at which point it will require 66 Runecrafting to siphon from. The dust is then exchanged at the end of the rune sphere, once it has been fully siphoned, with the runesphere core, which will award players 10 XP per dust traded.

Players can siphon from as many runespheres per day as they wish. Although only 1,000 dust per day can be siphoned. There is also a limit of trading in for XP, just once a day.

Zybez RuneScape Help's picture of a runesphere message

Finding a runesphere is made easier by a message appearing in your chat box and a runesphere icon, which will display in the top left corner of your screen. When this is showing it means a runesphere is active in your current world. However, it doesn't necessarily mean it is active on your floor, and can be on any of the three. Runespheres can only give a maximum of 10,000 XP, taking into account the 1,000 dust limit and each is worth 10 XP. Therefore, if you can access nodes such as skulls or higher, your time would be better spent siphoning from them, and not running around finding a runesphere.

5.0 - Strategies

In Runespan, there aren't quite level strategies, instead there are methods to maximize your experience gain. All methods can be done at any level, but some levels will find it more beneficial than others.

5.1 - Island Camping

This method involves staying at one Runespan island, but you may occasionally hop over to the next one if you see a good node. It requires the least time to be active at the keyboard of the three methods. This is the most efficient way of leveling Runecrafting in the Runespan at lower levels. There's no point running around islands that you can't siphon the nodes because of your level, or can't even reach many islands because you don't have the required level to cross the platform, so it's easier to stay put on one island. If you are interested in the yellow wizard, it's better to wait for it to teleport to you, or an adjacent island. It is more efficient to focus on nodes at the lower levels than the wizard.

First, find an island that spawns an ess creature that is the highest you can siphon from. This generally means the nodes on this island will be around that level of ess creature. Start by siphoning from the creature until it disappears, which is usually around one minute (however if you click again on the ess creature before you use up 10 essence the creature will not disappear). It only takes a few seconds for ess creatures to spawn again, so wait, and re-click. Keep doing this until a worthwhile node pops up on your island, or an easily accessible island, and begin to siphon that until it is gone, and you can return back to the ess creature.

5.2 - Island Hopping

This method starts to become effective on the first floor when you reach 33, effective on the second floor when you reach 66, and effective on the third floor when you reach 85. It involves finding islands which spawn the best ess creatures that you can siphon, and hanging around a group of islands. The islands generally spawn better nodes the further to the center of the map that they are, so aim to go to the center.

Once you can access the third floor, and have either 77 or 85 Runecrafting you can effectively do this method. If you don't have 85 Runecrafting, omit island one.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Image of floor 3 methodSticking to this area of islands on floor 3 is best. They are in the center of the map and each one is connected by a platform for easy crossing, rather than others around the center which are dead ends. Island number ones requires you have 85 Runecrafting to be able to cross the platform to island 2, so if you don't have 85, just disregard island one.

Esswraiths are prominent on all of these islands, and high level nodes constantly spawn. If you can siphon soul esswraiths, it's recommended to do those, unless a node that is jumper (law)+ appears. Soul esswraiths award you with 106xp if successful, and a jumper and above awards you with more.

To cross the platforms on these islands, you will need a nice supply of body runes. On the island south of island one, there is a body hound, which you can use to resupply your body runes, and get some extra rune essence for the nodes.

If you can't access floor 3 or you don't have the level to do this effectively then it's a simple strategy to follow. Find islands grouped close together than you can jump from platform to platform to, Make sure they are close to the center of the map, on any floor. It also helps to see what type of ess creature respawns on the island, which will give you an indication to the quality of the nodes that may appear

5.3 - Island Hopping + Wizard

This method is a combination of the previous two. You will either follow one of the two methods, and when you hear the yellow wizard asking for your help, you will. This is the method that will take the most moving around, but could potentially award you with the best experience per hour.

6.0 - Rewards

After creating runes in the Runespan your point total will accumulate and you'll be able to spend the points with Wizard Finix who can be found at the Runcrafting guild portal. Free players cannot earn rewards.

6.1 - Items
Zybez RuneScape Help's item screen Image

In Wizard Finix's shop it is possible to buy another wicked hood for 175, however it has no difference than the one you get get for free from Tam McGruber. However, to have multiple hoods of different colours, you will need to buy more than one. When you buy the cape, legs or robe top, each piece enhances the wicked hood. For each extra piece you get to claim 25 more rune essence daily and one more rune claim per day from the wicked hood. When you have all three extra pieces of the wicked set (it does not have to be equipped) you also receive an extra wicked hood teleport per day.

Instead of degrading like other pouches, this pouch will disappear completely when it is used fully, at which point another one will need to be purchased, or you can start using another massive pouch to make it the new, active one.
6.2 - Esteem
Zybez RuneScape Help's Esteem screen Image

Esteem is purely cosmetic. Every esteem you earn and purchase is a new icon. This icon appears in places over your wicked robes. It appears on the wicked hood, on your shoulder of the robe top, and on the front of the legs. There is no benefit in runespan to having rank 1 esteem, although, it is needed for a trimmed completionist cape.

When it comes to esteem, it works in a similar way to the livid farm system. The points you spent on the previous esteem level is deduced from the next esteem level. For example, it costs 15 esteem for rank 10, and 60 esteem for rank 9, but after already purchasing esteem 10, the cost for 9 will go down to 45. Therefore, the cost of esteem rank 1 is actually 125,000, but the total points needed to reach there are 211,860.

The table below list each esteem levels individual point cost, followed by the total amount of points that are needed to reach that esteem.

Rank 10 Rank 9 Rank 8 Rank 7 Rank 6 Rank 5 Rank 4 Rank 3 Rank 2 Rank 1
15 45 130 370 1,000 2,800 7,500 20,000 55,000 125,000
15 60 190 560 1,560 4,360 11,860 31,860 86,860 211,860
6.3 - Re-Colour
Zybez RuneScape Help's recolour screen Image

To re-colour your robes it will cost 2,000 points every time. You can only re-colour what you have equipped, so if you have more than one set of robes you want re-colouring, then you'll have to do it more than once. If your goal is for a re-coloured set of the robes, it is advised to get the set first, and then to re-colour, or else you'll have to pay 2,000 points for each piece of the robe set.
