Firemaking is a simple skill that goes along with Woodcutting, but can be used to accompany Cooking, too. Firemaking is easy to level as the experience given from each log is quite high.
To start firemaking, you'll need a tinderbox. You can obtain one of these on Tutorial Island, but if you lost it, you can buy one from any General store for 1gp. You are also able to obtain a free tinderbox from the Lumbridge General store and a free Bronze hatchet from Bob's Brilliant Axes, the hatchet shop in Lumbridge.
To light a fire you must 'use' a tinderbox with some logs, which will result in a short animation involving you crouching down and lighting them. If you fail to set your logs on fire, you will keep trying until you are successful. When you light the fire, you will automatically walk one square to the west (if possible). Should you not be able to go west, you will take a step east onto your previous fire.
Another way to light a fire is to drop the logs on the ground and then use your tinderbox on them. This way, however, is much slower than the first way and it will take longer to light your fires. You may also right click on the logs after dropping them and click "Light".
After you light the fire, you can use it for whatever you please, however the only obvious use for a fire is to cook on.
There are many different types of logs for you to light around RuneScape and each one has different requirements; some even have rewards. In the next section, you will find out about the different types of logs.

The fastest way to train firemaking is to store logs in the bank, then withdraw, burn and repeat until you've used up all your logs, then withdraw burn, repeat and so on.
You should always train with the highest level logs you can use/afford, because it is not possible to 'fail' burning a log. Your Firemaking level and the logs you're using won't affect the speed you light fires at.
Here is a table which compares experience per hour with the cost of such experience, you can use this to help you decide which logs are best for you. You can burn approximately 1,200 logs per hour.
| Log type | Price for 1,200 logs | Experience per hour |

The other way you could train Firemaking is by cutting and burning logs at the same time. If you wish to train like this (although I wouldn't recommend it past level 50), use the following methods.
The early beginning levels: You only need to burn three normal logs to advance to level 2.
Free Players: Cut (Picture) and burn normal logs in Draynor Village forest (Picture).
Members: Cut and burn normal logs in Draynor Village forest.
Free Players: Cut (Picture) and burn Oak logs in Draynor Village forest (Picture).
Members: Cut and burn Oak logs in Draynor Village forest.
Although free players can burn Maple logs, they're probably a bit expensive so don't worry about buying them to burn at level 45 firemaking.
Free Players: Cut (Picture) and burn Willow logs behind the Draynor Village bank (Picture), or south-east of Melzars' Maze near Rimmington.
Members: Cut (Picture) and burn Willow logs behind Seers' Village bank (Picture).
Free Players: If you can afford to buy Maple logs, now would be a good time to do so, and in turn switch to the quicker method where you burn many logs in one go. If you're a bit strapped for cash keep on cutting and burning Willow logs. It would be a good idea to save time by stockpiling your Willow logs in the bank then burning them all in one go at one of the locations stated in the Training Locations section.
Members: Cut (Picture) and burn maple logs behind Seers' Village bank (Picture). Another option would to cut (Picture) and burn Teak/Mahogany logs at Tai Bwo Wannai (Picture) (remember you will need 100 trade sticks to enter!).
Free Players: Cut (Picture) and burn Willow logs. They are in abundance behind Draynor Village bank (Picture).
Members: Cut (Picture) and burn Maple logs. There are lots behind the Seers' Village bank (Picture).
If you are going to cut your logs, then Willow and Maple are still the fastest, as Yews are very slow to cut. If you are going to buy them at this level, then both free players and members should purchase Yew logs to burn.
Free Players: Burning Willow and Yew logs is the fastest way to level in Free to Play. You may want to cut the logs, as you will also gain Woodcutting experience and you don't have to spend any money. An alternative way is to buy Maple logs from Grand Exchange, as Maple logs can be burned in Free to Play.
Members: Ok, your best bet is to buy or cut Maple logs (Picture). Maple logs yield 135 exp per log burned. You will need 87,585 Maple logs to 99 from 75. Alternatively, you could cut/buy and burn Yew or Eucalyptus logs. Yew logs yield 202.5 exp per log burned and Eucalyptus logs provide 193.5 experience. You will need 58,390 Yew logs to 99 from 75, or 61,106 Eucalyptus logs. Aside from the expensive and time consuming magic logs, Yews and Eucalyptuses are the best logs to burn. However, if you do buy them, they can cost quite a bit. There are many locations for cutting Yews, these include: Edgeville, Seers' Village, Tree Gnome Stronghold and many more. Eucalyptus logs can be found to the south of Feldip Hills, between Oo'glog and Mobilising Armies.
If you have bought your logs, the quickest time saver will be choosing a good location to firemake at. The best locations to firemake are the ones that will hold 27 fires in a row, but as long as it has this there isn't very much difference between the spots. Remember that unless obstructed by an object, you will always walk to the west after having lit a fire.
Below is a table containing some of the more popular places to firemake.

Of course, these are not the only places you can train firemaking, other popular locations include Draynor Village, Piscatoris Fishing Colony, and the Rogues' Den, but the skill can be trained just about anywhere.
This section contains information on everything which will boost the experience you get from every log you burn, such as Summoning familiars and various items.
When you have lit a certain number of beacons in the Beacon mini game, you can obtain various rewards. These rewards will help you train Firemaking quicker and can be found listed below. Information on how to part take in the mini game can be found in the Beacon Lighting section or at the bottom of our All Fired Up quest guide.
| Item | Picture | Beacon Amount | Information |
| Ring of fire | ![]() |
6 Beacons | Increases the amount of experience when burning a log by 2%. |
| Flame gloves | ![]() |
10 Beacons | Increases the amount of Firemaking experience received when burning a log by 2%. If you wear this along with the ring of fire then the combined experience bonus will be 5%. |
| Inferno Adze | ![]() |
14 Beacons | This item counts as a Woodcutting hatchet, and it is as fast as a Dragon hatchet. When cutting wood, it burns 30% of the logs you cut. You will receive the normal amount of Firemaking experience as you would by using a tinderbox on the log. In addition to that, it can also be used as pickaxe. |
There are some familiars, summoned via the Summoning skill which can be used as a substitute for a tinderbox. They provide a bonus amount of experience for each log you burn, however I wouldn't recommend using them because they are very slow.

Firelighters are items that can be used to give bonus Firemaking experience when lighting regular logs. They also change the colour of the fire itself. Firelighters range from colours red to purple. To create a coloured fire, use the firelighter on a regular log. The log will then turn to the colour of the firelighter. From there, use a tinderbox with the coloured log to create the coloured fire.
The only way you can get firelighters is by completing any level clue scroll. Firelighters are a common reward. The below table shows all of the information about these firelighters.

In the Shades of Mort'ton quest, you have to burn a new kind of log, the "Pyre log." Adding sacred oil to any log will gain you 10 Firemaking exp. To burn the shade remains, use a pyre log on the funeral pyre (located in the town), add the required shade remains to the pyre and then light the funeral pyre. An explanation of these very useful Pyre logs is in our Mort'ton Funeral Pyres game guide. After completion of Legacy of Seergaze quest players can also use Vyrewatch corpses with Teak pyre logs and above. Vyrewatch pyres can only be burned in the Columbarium discovered during the quest inside Paterdomus. Burning Vyrewatch pyres is more rewarding than normal pyre burning, receiving keys to cabinets that can hold even Dragon items. Here are the level requirements:

Light Sources are required to illuminate the Lumbridge Caves, and various other locations in RuneScape. Remember to bring a tinderbox in case the lantern burns out, as without one, bugs will rapidly attack you, striking many 1's until you are dead.
The higher quality the lantern, the further you can go into the cave. Note that having a naked flame (a lit candle) in your inventory with an oil lamp will cause it to explode. The best quality lanterns are the Bullseye Lantern and the Mining Helmet. You can obtain Mining helmets after completing Lost Tribe, The quest, or from the level 11 miner-goblins within the Lumbridge Caves.
More detailed information on how to craft lanterns is in our Crafting guide.

In the city of Dorgesh-Kaan, there is a special lighting system. There are lamps all around the city powered by a generator. Occasionally one of the lamps will burn out and need replacing. To replace a bulb, grab a Dorgeshuun light orb by either thieving one from the chests in the city or by making one with level 87 Crafting and adding a filament wire (found on the wire machine in the south-west part of the city) to it.
Use the complete orb with any burnt out lamps you find for a large amount of experience. If you manage to fix 100 bulbs, you will receive a bonus 5000 Firemaking experience.

After the completion of the quest Enlightened Journey, you are able to craft an Origami Balloon, by first making a Balloon structure, using a ball of wool with some Papyrus, then adding a Candle.

These torches can be found in the Haunted Woods east of Canifis. To light them, you will require a tinderbox and some bark, which can be obtained by cutting the Hollow trees found inside the woods. On top of 100 firemaking experience for lighting the beaker, your prayer will be replenished by 10 points.

Firstly speak to Otto and ask about Barbarian Firemaking skills, he will tell you to take a bow and use it with Oaken (Oak) logs as a way of lighting them without a tinderbox. You can use any type of bow except the Dark, Ogre or Crystal bows. Lighting logs in this manner gives the same experience as lighting them with a tinderbox. After lighting your first logs, speak to Otto again to be able to continue. If you wish to light logs with a bow, you are able to do so 20 levels after you would be able to light them with a tinderbox, for instance, you can light Willow logs at level 30 with a tinderbox, and level 50 with a bow.
Note: The next step can be dangerous and requires the use of combat gear, anti-dragonfire shields, anti-fire potions, super sets, teleports out and high healing food are highly recommended inside the cave.
After lighting the logs, talk to Otto again and he will instruct you on how to burn and create pyre ship funerals for dead barbarians. For a funeral pyre, you need any type of log (though remember to note that the higher the level wood, the longer you receive Prayer experience from burying bones after the procedure), and the chewed bones of a dead barbarian warrior. The remains of barbarians can be gathered in the Ancient Cavern (this can be reached by jumping into the whirlpool in the lake south of the barbarian outpost); fight the more difficult creatures in the cavern and they have the chance of dropping either mangled or chewed bones, however, the mangled bones don't reward you when burnt and instead cause a Ferocious/Enraged/Angry/Berserk Barbarian Spirit (level-166) to attack. Be careful in the cave to avoid being attacked by other monsters as you gather bones. You can leave the cave by the logs at the edge of the underground river, by teleporting out or by using the fairy ring code BJQ (note you must fix this using three mushrooms and a spade first).
Once you have logs, the chewed bones, and a bow or tinderbox, you can build a pyre at the edge of the lake north of Otto using a "Pyre-site." The burning of the remains will give you Firemaking experience, and a bonus depending on the logs you used, to the experience gained when burying bones. When you burn the remains you will be given a reward for setting the hero's spirit free, which can even be the Dragon full helmet! Speak to Otto once more to complete your training.

When you complete the All Fired Up quest you will have the ability to try your hand at the Beacon Lighting mini game. The mini game involves 14 beacons placed along the edge of the wilderness, the player having to run from beacon to beacon, adding 20 logs and lighting them, the aim being to keep as many beacons light simultaneously as possible.
For more in-depth information, take a look at our Beacon Mini game guide, information on the mini game's rewards can be found here.
If you have a fully charged Penance horn, you can receive double experience while burning logs. To fill your horn with potential experience, simply play through the Barbarian Assault mini-game with the rewards set to "Experience."
See our Barbarian Assault guide for more information.
