1.0 - Introduction

Barrows is one of the toughest mini games to be released thus far. It involves defeating the Barrows Brothers and desperately trying to make your way through an ancient crypt to arrive at the brothers' chest. Within this chest lie many items, ranging from the exclusive Barrows equipment, to magic runes, and even Dragon medium helms. Be warned: this mini game is not for the faint-hearted, or weaker players; every turn has some scary, powerful monsters ready to attack! It is a dangerous mini game, so if you die you will lose your items. This guide describes what you should bring to make effective trips to the Barrows, and the delights of the brothers' armour and weapons.

1.1 - Quest Recommendations

To make the most out of the Barrows mini game, ensure that you have completed the quest recommendations detailed below. First and foremost however, you must have completed the Priest in Peril quest to gain access to the Barrow mini game.

Note: If you're not a big quest fanatic then the only quest you should focus on completing is In Search of the Myreque. The shortcut helps out tremendously when getting to Barrows.

2.0 - How to get there

The Barrow Brother's crypts are located to the east of Mort'ton, in Morytania. There are numerous methods you could use to get to the Barrows; this section outlines them. For a map on these methods, click here.

Method 1: Walking

Requirements:

This method is the more simple of the three, yet takes much more time. Head east of Varrock, until you reach Canifis. Once in Canifis, use the bank to withdraw any supplies you need - don't bring them on the run from Varrock to Canifis, as it'll slow you down - and go behind the pub.

Climb down the trapdoor, and you will find yourself in the pub's basement. Search the wall to find a secret door; squeeze through it and walk to the other side of the tunnel until you reach a door. Go through the door, and you will find yourself at The Hollows. Head south now, and go over the small bridge you repaired during the In Search of the Myreque quest (if any planks appear to be broken, simple click repair and it should fix itself without the need for any tools).

Zybez RuneScape Help's Boat Map

Continue on south as fast as possible, to prevent losing any food to the Ghasts. Once you reach the river, find the Swamp Boat and hop in. Take the boat downstream to Mort'ton, cross the bridge, and head east to the Barrows.

Alternatively if you cannot access the pubs shortcut, just go through the swamp, walk all the way south, following the south-west water-edge, until you get to the Nature altar location and continue South-East past what looks like a maze until you reach Mort'ton, cross the bridge, and head east to the Barrows.

If you choose to walk all the way through the swamp, and you have completed the Nature Spirit quest, you can recharge your Prayer at the nature altar inside of the grotto just before you cross the bridge out of the swamp. Simply jump the broken bridge, enter the grotto, and you will see the altar. Take note that recharging your Prayer here gives you a prayer point bonus, much like praying at the monestary.

Method 2: Ectofuntus Teleport

Requirements:

  • Must have completed the Ghosts Ahoy quest.
  • Must have a full ectophial.

When you finish a trip at the Barrows and want to go on another one, the best way to get back quickly, is by using your ectophial to teleport you to Port Phasmatys. Once there, refill it at the Ectofuntus, run west to Canifis, and head back through the swamp to Barrows.

Alternatively, if you have an amulet of Ghostspeak, you can bank in Port Phasmatys (if you need to), and run to the Swamp Boaty without having to go through Canifis. To do this, run towards, then south of the Werewolf Agility Arena, cross the bridge, and continue trekking south until you find the boat. Hop aboard and when you arrive, make your way east to the Barrows.

This method is much faster and safer to use. If you don't know your way around Mort Myre Swamp, then use the shortcut behind Canifis pub to get to the Hollows - otherwise run straight there from Port Phasmatys.

Method 3: Teleporting to Canifis (Kharyrll teleport on ancients)

Requirements:

  • Level 66 magic
  • Two law runes, one blood rune
  • Must have completed the Desert Treasure quest.

This method depends on the type of magic you decide to use against the Barrows Brothers as you must have it set to Ancient Magicks, to cast the Kharyrll (Canifis) teleport. This spell transports you to the front of Canifis' pub, where you can bank, and then take the shortcut to the Hollows to get back to Barrows.

Method 4: House teleporting

Requirements:

  • Level 50 construction and 50 magic
  • Kharyrll teleport in house, 1 law, 1 air, 1 earth
  • Completion of Desert Treasure
  • House with Portal Chamber (with Kharyrll teleport)

This method, is only good, if you have a portal with the Kharyrll teleport. Teleport with the house teleport, use your altar (if you have one), use your portal to teleport to Canifis, bank, and then use the shortcut in the pub.

Method 5: Drakan's Medallion

Requirements:

By at least starting Branches of Darkmeyer you have access to Drakan's Medallion which offers a direct teleport to the Barrows minigame.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Barrows Tomb Locations Map Crumbling tome

The Brothers' crypts have remained dormant since the end of the 3rd age, and were only recently discovered during an excavation of the area. An ancient, crumbling tome was found near the area, and can be found in the hut by the entrance to the Barrows for your perusal; it's quite an interesting read. It discusses the Barrow Brother's roles in the God Wars and their eventual split.

Those who dare to fight these ancient spirits had better be prepared, for they show no mercy. Once you've disturbed their resting place, they will battle you full-force. Each brother has their own special ability, which is attributed to their respective armour sets, and will utilise said ability during combat. When you have killed at least one brother, you will be able to enter the maze-like tomb below.

Although finding which crypt lets you enter the tomb can be tricky, as it randomizes each trip. Another thing to be aware of, is that when the heads of the brothers appear in your game window, they are draining your Prayer. Also, ensure that you turn accept aid to off so people don't teleother you while you're on low health, which may cause you to die.

3.1 - Barrow Brothers In-Depth

Before fighting these merciless enemies, you should first take a look at their abilities. Each brother has a different battle style and learning them will be of a strong advantage to you.

Picture About
Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Ahrim the Blighted
Level: 130
Style: Magic
Crypt: Middle
Difficulty: Easy-Medium

Notes: Ahrim is the only brother that uses Magic. He casts fire wave and stat weakening spells that could leave even the most powerful warrior crippled. Like all magicians, he is weak against Ranged.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Dharok the Wretched
Level: 196
Style: Melee
Crypt: North-east
Difficulty: Hard

Notes: Dharok is the strongest brother in terms of brute force. He uses powerful melee attacks that can hit upwards to nearly 800 damage but they lack accuracy. Fortunately for you, a simple protect from melee prayer is all it will take to stop these attacks from connecting. Also, keep in mind that at times, there will be other players inside the chamber who WILL teleother you when your Prayer runs out, enabling Dharok to hit high numbers on you. Be careful, and always turn accept aid off when fighting Dharok.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Guthan the Infested
Level: 147
Style: Melee
Crypt: South-east
Difficulty: Medium-Hard

Notes: Guthan is also a melee user but he has the ability to heal the amount of damage that gets inflicted upon you. Because of this, you'll need to end this fight quickly without letting it drag on for too long.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Karil the Tainted
Level: 121
Style: Ranged
Crypt: South
Difficulty: Medium

Notes: Karil can be one of the deadliest brothers of all. His attacks with the crossbow are both accurate and powerful. To make matters worse, his melee defence is extremely high so playing with the combat triangle won't work here. His Magic defence, however, is considerably low so it's wise to keep that in mind.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Torag the Corrupted
Level: 146
Style: Melee
Crypt: South-west
Difficulty: Medium-Hard

Notes:Torag wields duel hammers as his main weapon and they have the ability to reduce your running energy by 10%. His attacks are fairly quick but they're not too accurate so taking him down won't pose too much of a challenge to you.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Verac the Defiled
Level: 146
Style: Melee
Crypt: North-west
Difficulty: Medium

Notes: Verac is almost like Karil but he uses melee instead. His attacks are slow but accurate and powerful. To make matters worse, he has the ability to strike through your Prayer so it can make for a tough challenge.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Picture

Name: Akrisae the Doomed
Level: 115
Style: Melee
Crypt: North-west with Verac
Difficulty: Medium

Notes: Akrisae is the new and youngest of the Barrows brothers. He attacks with melee and unlike his brothers he uses protection prayers. You will have to fight him using at least 2 styles to counter his protection prayers. He can easily be killed without the use of prayer as his accuracy and defense are relatively low compared to his brothers.

3.2 - The Tomb

Once you have awoken the brothers, and killed at least one of them, you will be able to enter the tomb - although finding it can be a little tricky. The brothers' crypts always stay in the same place, meaning Guthan is always in the south-east corner; Dharok is always in the north-east corner, etc. However, whether or not the brother is actually in his crypt, is randomized every trip. If you find that a brother is not in his sarcophagus, it means this crypt is the "hidden" entrance to the tomb, and that you will encounter that brother down in the tomb either before you get to the chest, or when you arrive at the chest. So, once you've found the hidden entrance - and are sure you're prepared for the onslaught of skeletons, rats, spiders or leeches - climb down.

The Barrows tomb is located below the brethrens' crypts, and is quite difficult to navigate through. There are nine rooms in total, with four passageways that take you from one side to the other, with the middle room, being the chest room. Adventurers must be wary while navigating through this maze-like tomb, as arriving at the chest is, unfortunately, no easy feat. This is due to the complete randomisation of open and shut doors, the skeletons, rats, spiders, and leeches, and the certainty of bumping into one of the brothers. On top of that, you may well be low on food, life points and Prayer, which makes it far more dangerous. As with the crypts, when the faces of the brethren appear on the game window, it means they are slowly draining your Prayer.

Once you have managed to get to the door leading into the chest room, you will be tested with a simple question. This question is like a SOI (structure of intelligence) question, whereby you must choose the correct image that finishes off a given sequence. The question itself is easy, however, being able to click on the right answer is not! It becomes frustrating when the answers and questions randomize, and when monsters attack you, taking you away from the question screen before you can answer. You have to be very fast to get in! If you get the puzzle wrong, the room will shake, and the entire maze will "reset itself", and you need to start all over finding the chest room.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Barrows Puzzle Door Animation

If you manage to get into the chest room, and haven't already been visited by a brother, then be prepared! He will attack you either when you enter the room, or when you open the chest. You can try to escape him, but watch your life points level to ensure you don't die. Once you have your reward, you must exit the same way you came in, unless the maze reset itself, in which case you will have to search for the ladder, as the room it's in randomizes as well - you could use your Ectophial or Lumbridge teleport to escape.

The rewards from the chest are great, and unfortunately, completely random. Within the chest, you may find items such as a piece of barrows equipment, coins, mind runes, chaos runes, death runes, blood runes, bolt racks, dragon med helm, or a half key. Many theories surround how you can obtain these rewards, and more importantly, the barrows items. Leading theories on the amount of runes given in the chest state that the more of a certain NPC you kill in the tomb, the higher amount of runes you will receive.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Barrows Chest Image

Once you have looted the chest, it is highly recommended you go and restock your supplies by either selling them to the Mort'ton General Store, or if you have completed the In Aid of the Myreque quest, banking in Burgh de Rott. If you have a high defence level, you can take less food, allowing more room for prayer potions. This way, you can do a couple runs off of one inventory.

4.0 - Suggested Equipment and Strategies

There is no "one way" to handle Barrows. Many ways exist for tackling this mini game efficiently and effectively. Likewise, the items and equipment you take all depend on which strategy you choose. Each strategy is unique with its own style so choose the one that suits you best.

4.1 - Slayer Dart Method

The slayer dart method is a popular method that combines Magic attacks with melee and Ranged armour. The Barrow Brothers all have an extremely low Magic defence so your attacks will not be penalized by the melee or Ranged armour that you're wearing. With that being said, your attacks will all be accurate while you take minimal amounts of damage. You can also substitute the slayer dart spell for the fire wave spell. This method costs a lot more but you get through trips easier.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Slayer Dart Items
Requirements:
  • 55 Slayer
  • 50+ Magic
  • 60+ Defence (70 Defence if you're using Barrows armour)
  • 43+ Prayer

Equipment:

Inventory:

Dharok

Before you fight, turn protect from melee on. After that, open his tomb and attack him with slayer dart. If your Prayer lowers to 11 points or lower, drink a dose of your prayer potion immediately to prevent it from dropping to 0.

Ahrim

Equip your black dragonhide and magic shortbow before you enter his crypt. Turn protect from magic on as soon as he spawns and then shower him with arrows. Don't forget to keep your Prayer up if it starts to lower.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Slayer Dart Method
Verac

Switch back to your melee armour and weapon before going into battle. Also, take a drink of your super defence potion. When Verac spawns, repeatedly hit him with your slayer dart spell until he falls. If for some reason you're getting hurt too much, you can turn on protect from melee to help reduce some of the damage.

Karil

Take off your melee armour before fighting Karil to enable your Magic attacks to hit more. Keep using the slayer dart spell on him and turn protect from missles on if you're getting hurt too much.

Guthan

Put your melee armour back on and enter Guthan's crypt. When he appears, use your slayer dart spell to quickly defeat him. If he starts to heal too much then you may want to turn on protect from melee temporarily until you damage him enough.

Torag

Simply use your slayer dart spell on him and the fight should end quickly.

4.2 - Black Salamander Method

The black salamander method is another great method that utilises the aspect of Ranged, Magic, and Melee. Unlike the slayer dart method though, this one allows you to use all three forms of attack without having to switch weapons and using up valuable inventory space.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Black Salamander Items
Requirements:
  • 70+ Magic
  • 70+ Attack
  • 70+ Ranged
  • 60+ Defence (70 Defence if you're using Barrows armour)
  • 60+ Strength
  • 43+ Prayer

  • Alternative: Rune platelegs
  • » Torag helmet
  • Alternative: Rune full helmet
  • » Barrow gloves
  • Alternative: Fist of Guthix gauntlets
  • » Dragon boots
  • Alternative: Rune boots
  • » Black salamander
  • » God cloak
  • Alternative: Cape of Achievements, Legends cape
  • » Amulet of glory
  • Alternative: Amulet of strength
  • » Ring of life
  • » Harralander tar

Inventory:
  • » Dragon dagger p++
  • » Spade
  • » Teleport tab
  • » Super defence potion (4)
  • » Prayer potion (4) x2
  • » Sharks, monkfish, or lobster x 20
Dharok

Before you attempt to fight Dharok, make sure that your black salamander's attack style is switched to Magic. As soon as you open the crypt, turn protect from melee on immediately and attack him. Remember that if your Prayer starts to drain below 11 points then you should drink a dose of your prayer potion.

Ahrim

Make sure that your black salamander's attack style is switched to Ranged before fighting Ahrim. When you open his crypt, turn protect from magic on and attack him. Your prayer points will most likely start to drain fairly quickly so be keen about that.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Black Salamander Method
Verac

Drink a dose of your super defence potion and switch your attack style to Magic before fighting Verac. Open his crypt and continue to attack him. Don't worry about turning your Prayer on because he can hit through it anyways. It is rumored though that having it on reduces the amount of blows you'll take but it hasn't been confirmed. Also, don't be afraid to eat some of that food you had been saving because that's why it's there.

Karil

Switch your attack style to Magic and then equip your dragon dagger p++. Open his crypt, use all of your daggers special attack on him, and then switch back to your black salamander to attack. His attacks are strong so you may want to turn on a protection from range prayer.

Guthan

Simply open his crypt and continue to attack him with the Magic attack style on your black salamander. If he starts to heal a lot then you may want to pray against him for a few attacks until you knock down his life points. You can also attack with your dragon dagger p++ a few times to poison him.

Torag

Once you open his crypt, attack him with the Magic attack style like you did with Guthan. You can also use the dragon dagger p++ if you would like to end the fight quicker with its poison.

4.3 - Verac Method

The Verac method uses melee throughout the entire process which makes Barrowing much quicker and easier. This method also gives a decent Prayer bonus so you don't use as many prayer potions. The final perk of this method is that it doesn't use runes or tar like the other methods so you save a fair bit of money as well.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Verac Items
Requirements:
  • 80+ Attack
  • 80+ Strength
  • 80+ Defence
  • 43+ Prayer

Equipment:
  • » Verac brassard
  • » Verac plateskirt
  • » Verac helmet
  • » Barrow gloves
  • Alternative: Fist of Guthix gauntlets
  • » Dragon boots
  • Alternative: Rune boots
  • » Verac flail
  • » Fire cape
  • Alternative: Cape of Achievements, Obsidian cape, God cloak, Legends cape
  • » Amulet of glory
  • Alternative: Amulet of strength
  • » Berserker ring
  • Alternative: Ring of life

Inventory:
  • » Dragon dagger p++
  • » Spade
  • » Teleport tab
  • » Super defence, attack, and strength potion (4)
  • » Prayer potion (4) x2
  • » Sharks, monkfish, or lobster x 20
Dharok

Drink a dose of your super attack and strength potion before fighting Dharok. Once you open up his crypt, turn on protect from melee and attack him with your flail. If your Prayer starts to fall below 11 points, then drink a dose of your prayer potion immediately.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Verac Method
Verac

Take a dose of your super defence potion before you enter his tomb. After you open the crypt, attack him. You shouldn't have to use any Prayer here and don't be afraid if you have to eat.

Karil

Equip your dragon dagger p++ and attack him with your special attack when you open his crypt. After that, switch back to your flail. Both the damage and poison you inflicted upon him with your dagger should weaken him considerably so you shouldn't have to waste too much food.

Ahrim

Turn on protect from magic and open the crypt. Attack and poison him with your dragon dagger p++. If your special bar is depleted, simply poison him and proceed to kill him with your flail.

Guthan

Open his crypt and continue to attack him with your flail. You can poison him with your dagger if you would like to make the fight go quicker. If he seems to be healing continuously then you should turn on protect from melee to make up for lost time.

Torag

Once you open his crypt, attack him with your flail. Like Guthan, you can poison him with your dagger but he shouldn't pose much of a threat. If he does hit you too frequently, turn on protect from melee.

4.4 - Ancient Magicks Method

This method consists of running from the enemy, using a Ice Barrage/Blitz spell to freeze them in place, and then attacking them from afar with other spells. It's a very useful method because you rarely have to consume any prayer potions or food. The downside, however, is that the runes can get expensive.

Inventory:
  • » Blood, death, and water runes
  • » Spade
  • » Teleport tab
  • » Prayer potion (4) x1
  • » Sharks, monkfish, or lobster x 20
Dharok

After you open his crypt, freeze him with one of your ice spells, run away from him, and cast your offensive spell on him. Keeping protect from melee on is highly recommended because even though he can't hit you, there is a possibility that you may not freeze him in time when he unfreezes.

Ahrim, Verac, Karil, Guthan, and Torag

The strategy for all of these brothers is the same. Cast your ice spell on the brother, run away, and then use your attacking spell.

4.5 - Guthan Method

The Guthan method specialises in saving you food. Whenever your health starts to drop, switch to Guthans to heal any wounds you may have endured. There are two ways you can go about using this method and one method is slightly better (but more expensive) than the other.

Method A Explanation

This method is basically the same as the slayer dart method. You're casting slayer dart the whole time but the only difference is that you're wearing Guthan armour. Then when you get low on health, you switch to your spear and heal.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Guthan Item A

Method A Requirements:

  • 55 Slayer
  • 70+ Attack
  • 70+ Defence
  • 70+ Strength
  • 50+ Magic

  • Method A Equipment
    • » Guthan platebody

    • » Slayer staff
    • » Dragon square shield
    • Alternative: Rune kiteshield
    • » God cape
    • Alternative: Cape of achievement, obsidian cape, god cloak, legends cape
    • » Amulet of glory
    • Alternative: Amulet of power
    • » Seers ring
    • Alternative: Beacon ring, Lunar ring, Ring of life

  • Method A Inventory

    • » Death and mind runes
    • » Spade
    • » Teleport tablet
    • » Prayer potions (4) x2
    • » Sharks, monkfish, or lobster x15

Use the same strategy that's explained in the slayer dart method. Remember, you have Guthan's now so use that to heal when you're low on health.

Method B Explanation

Method B is the same thing as the Verac method. You will be using Verac's to fight the brothers but the difference is that you can switch to your Guthans to heal the damage you've taken. This method is better than method A because you're not using any runes for attacking meaning you're making even more money.

Use the same strategy that's explained in the Verac method. Remember, you have Guthan's now so use it to heal when you're low on health.

5.0 - Rewards

The Barrow Brother's battle gear is some of the strongest equipment in the game, all requiring very high levels to wear or wield. Each set of equipment has its own special ability, which randomly activates during combat; these are shown in the tables below.

The downside to the barrows gear, is that it degrades after a certain amount of time in combat, and cannot be used. Each piece, when fully charged, will last 15 hours in combat - how charged each piece is, is shown by the number following the item's name. For example, when you recharge it, or first obtain a piece of the barrows gear from the chest, it won't have a number. This means that it is fully charged. During combat, the piece will then drop down to 100, then 75, 50, 25 and finally 0. When it reaches 0, even if the armour is equipped, all of its bonuses become "+0" and once the sets are removed, they cannot be worn until repaired. Also, this gear is so exclusive, that it can only be traded when it's in 100% condition, or 0% condition. To repair your barrows pieces is a costly venture; repairing a full set from 0% will cost 330k. Of course, you can fix the pieces before they reach 0%, and it will cost you less, but ultimately it ends up being the same price.

To get your pieces fixed, take them to the following places, and use them with the person mentioned: Bob, Bob's Axes Lumbridge; Tindel Merchant, Port Khazard docks; Dunstan, Burthorpe's anvil, Burthorpe; and the Blacksmith Squire at the Void Knight Outpost. Another option is to create an Armour stand in the workshop of your House, and repair it there. The cost in repairing your armour by yourself depends on your smithing level, and is much less than taking it to an NPC for repair.

Note: All of the Barrows weapons are two-handed; a shield cannot be wielded with them.

Full Set Special When the full set is worn it will randomly restore the players Prayer Points equal to roughly 1/3rd of the total damage, and during PvP situations it will drain the opponent's prayer at the same time. A smaller prayer drain of roughly 1 point every 15-20 second also occurs, even after battle. The Set Effect is comparable to Guthan the Infested, but it restores Prayer instead of Lifepoints.
