Mort Myre's southern border has been breached. Adventurers have discovered a windy path to a strangely isolated town, by the name of Mort'ton. Reports have come in that the towns-people are afflicted, with some awful disease. Prior to being allowed access to the Mort'ton dungeon, and stores, you must first prove yourself, by completing the Shades Of Mort'ton quest. At the end of the quest, make a serum 208 and use it on the shopkeeper, so he will no longer be afflicted to you (although he may appear afflicted after applying the serum 208, you can still speak with him).
Once you have completed the quest, you are able to build the temple (must have a team of people), buy supplies from the general store, and access the dungeon. Delving to the far corners of the cave will reveal to you higher level shadows; not to mention higher level chests. Some of these chests will contain 'fine cloths' which are used in the creation of a magical defensive armour: Splitbark. Firstly however, you will require some keys!
It is necessary to begin shade burning on world 88, the official world, as there are very few people rebuilding the temple on other worlds.
Morytania is fairly easy to access once you have completed the Priest in Peril, Nature Spirit, Ghosts Ahoy, and In Search of the Myreque quests. The first two quests above allow you to walk from Varrock, whilst the last two allow you to teleport to Port Phasmatys. The pathways are shown below.

Loar Shades (level-40) are scattered throughout Mort'ton; kill a few of these, and collect their remains. Go to the general store, and buy some olive oils (2 doses per regular and oak log). Head over to the temple. If it's being rebuilt by some players, light the torch in the middle (provides 100 fm xp), and use the olive oil with the fire, to make sacred oil.
Now grab any type of log, and use the sacred oil on it; this makes it a 'pyre' log. Head off to a funeral pyre, and use one log on it followed by the shade remains. Use your tinderbox to light the log, then watch as the spirit rises, and leaves an item on the stand at the front of the pyre. If the spirit leaves a bronze key of any colour, you can enter the dungeon.
Once you're in the dungeon, kill a few Phrin shades (level-60), and collect their remains. Go back outside, and repeat the process above, except replace the Loar remains with Phrin remains, and light the pyre with either normal pyre log, oak log or higher. A normal log will work too, but it will drop bronze keys sometimes.
The further you delve into the dungeon, the higher level the shades become. Killing higher level shades, and attaining their remains, will allow you to access higher-level chests, with better items. Don't waste time making too many steel or bronze keys.
The below table shows all the shades, the log type required, the amount of sacred oil needed, and the firemaking and prayer XP given:

Completing the Legacy of Seergaze quest will enable you to burn Vyrewatch corpses in the Columbarium room of the Paterdomus temple. Vyrewatch can be found east of Burgh de Rott, in Mieyerditch, and in the Temple Trekking mini game (once you have finished Legacy of Seergaze). Vyrewatch can only be killed with an Ivandis Flail as well, meaning gathering of corpses is slower than shade remains. Burning a Vyrewatch corpse in the Columbarium will leave you with a Columbarium Key, which can be used to unlock the wall safes scattered around the room. From the safes expensive items such as Dragon spears can be attained along with further Blood talismans, the value of the rewards depends on the pyre logs used with the Vyrewatch corpses. You cannot enter the Mort'ton grave dungeon with the key.
This is an ideal inventory and outfit of what you should be bringing to Mort'ton.

Recommended Inventory

- » Silver sickle
- » Druid pouch
- » Rune axe
- » Willow logs (any other logs can be brought too, but Willows are better advised)
- » Tinderbox
- » Monkfish (can be replaced with Lobsters or Sharks)
- » Teleport runes (can be replaced with Ectophial)
You can bring sharks if you would like to, but lobsters or monkfish are fine. A fire staff and some nature runes are optional, but if you wish to High Alchemize the items you obtain from some of the chests, then you should bring them. A filled druid pouch is also optional, if you have to walk through Mort Myre swamp to get to Mort'ton. A good teleportation would either be an Ectophial or the Kharyrll teleport. It's highly recommended though that you do not use the Kharyrll teleport, as it's Ancient Magicks spellbook and you could not use the High Alchemy spell
Whether you are burning shades to gain prayer experience, items, or just for fun, you will need to be efficient; and to be efficient you need a good strategy. Below are great ways to help maximize the results during your shade burning experience.
Start off with taking as much money as you wish to spend on buying olive oil. Once you've bought 26, use them on each other until you have them in 4 doses. Repeat until you have 26 vials of oil (in 4 doses). Make your way to world 2 or world 88, and head to the Temple. Sometimes, you may have to wait for someone else to light the fire, but if you don't want to, you can take a tinderbox to light the fire yourself. Sanctify the 26 vials of olive oil by using them with the flame, and teleport using your Ectophial to the Ectofuntus. Bank in Port Phasmatys (or south of Mort'ton if you have completed the In Aid of the Myreque quest), then repeat the whole process, until you have as many vials of Sacred oil as you want.
Your next step is to make pyre logs by using the Sacred Oil on the type of log you wish to burn. Once you finish it, you may now withdraw the pyre logs, and make your way to Mort'ton. You get various kinds of metal keys from burning shade remains, which are used to unlock chests. The higher the type of key, the better the rewards you can get from the appropriate chest. If you want to clear space in your inventory, you can sell some of the items you receive to the General Store, which buys items at Low Alchemy prices.
This mini game offers a wide variety of rewards. The charts below will show you what you can obtain from them.
The keys to open these chests, come in Bronze, Steel, Black, and Silver. Each key-type has a coloured handle of either crimson, brown, red, black, or purple. The table below shows the chest-type and possible loot.

Fine cloth is used in the making of Splitbark armour - the only magical attack and defence armour in the game.
For each piece of fine cloth, you will need one piece of bark; as well as a certain amount of money. At level 45 woodcut, you can chop hollow trees, in the Morytanian Haunted Woods.
The table below shows the Splitbark armours' stats, as well as the bark, fine cloth, and money required to make each individual piece.

A: Not many people choose to burn shades, but the official world, world 88, usually has enough players building it to make it possible to burn shades.
A: Sometimes. On world 88, there are usually enough people that know how to build/protect the temple. So, yes, it most likely is a popular mini game on that certain world.
