1.0 - Introduction

Barbarian Assault, released in early 2007, is a relatively complex team-based mini-game which is only available for members. It is located north-east of the Tree Gnome Stronghold. This mini-game is safe, so you will not lose your items if you happen to die. Each team member must take a role in the game, with each role playing a vital part. You have to keep in touch with your other companions to help them accomplish their tasks, and this is done with a horn which you will receive at the start of the game. The key to winning Barbarian Assault is teamwork.

2.0 - Interface

To get started, speak to Captain Cain at the entrance to the mini-game arena, and he will inform you of the ins and outs of the game, giving you a basic tutorial on each of the roles available and monsters that you must slay. To become familiar with the game, listen to Captain Cain closely as he explains everything you need to know. There are no items required, but having good armour is a great advantage to reduce the chances of ending a round early due to death.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Room One Screenshot

Before starting, you can always look at the blackboard to see all of your points for each role, as well as your current wave level, points for next level, etc.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Room One Screenshot

Once you have finished your tutorial with Captain Cain, head down into the lobby where you'll have two options for starting the mini-game:

  1. Go to the room marked with a '1' on the floor, and either create or join a team. To create a team, take a recruitment scroll from the table in the room. Pick a role for yourself by using the 'Write-role' option on the scroll, and use the scroll on other players you would like ot recruit. Once you have 5 members in your team (one role will consist of two members), go down the ladder to start the round.
  2. Go into the larger room marked with an arrow on the floor. Once you go in, you will be asked to choose a role. The game will start once each role is occupied.

2.1 - Point Breakdown
Zybez RuneScape Help's Point Breakdown

When you finish a round of Barbarian Assault a scroll will come up similar to the one shown above. This shows the honour points that you have earned after the round has finished, along with the total honour points accumulated so far. There is also an option to level-up at the end of the round if you wish to do so.
The advanced breakdown shows the team’s honour points and individual honour points. The team's honour points are what the team earned, individual is what you earned yourself. Points are earned by fulfilling your duty in your role, and points are lost for not succeeding in your role. For example: a defender loses points for letting the runners escape into the cave.
Using the egg launcher does not raise your individual honour points but your team points, since it's not you doing the job. For a whole summary of losing and gaining points:

You can lose points in only 4 ways:

  • » Attacker - using wrong attack. (10 Points max)
  • » Healer - using wrong poisons. (10 Points max)
  • » Defender - letting runners reach the bottom exit. (10 Points max)

You can gain bonus points in only 2 ways:

  • » Collector - picking up eggs (60 eggs is max; you get 13 bonus points).
  • » Healer - Healing teammates life points (504-512 max; you get 28 bonus points).
3.0 - Gameplay

There are four roles in the mini game, with two people taking one role each. The four roles are: Attacker, Defender, Healer, and Collector, each being designated their own special tasks, and each having their own distinctive colour and logo. Once you start the game you will have a ring that displays your role around you and a interface with a 'mouth', 'ear', 'penance creature', and a 'horn'. The 'mouth' tells what to shout from your horn, the 'ear' tells you what type you should use, the 'penance creature' tells what wave you are on, the 'horn' tells who you should shout your horn to. Once you've entered the game you'll be given a horn, which tells the other roles what they need to be doing.

  • » The Defender's horn will tell the healer what poison to use, and the Healer's horn will tell the defender what bait to use.
  • » The Attacker's horn will tell what colour egg the collector should pick up, and the Collector's horn tells what type of combat style the attacker should do.

Should you complete your role during a round, i.e. you kill all of the monsters specific to your role, you can call for your other companions using the Horn of glory, which is located in the south-east corner of the cavern. The horn has the ability to tell your team what things they must drop, or what attack style to fight with.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Large Horn

Each role is crucial to the other. It's good to keep in touch with the role that tells you what to do. For a more in depth look at using each role to their maximum potential, see the strategies section.

3.1 - Attacker

As an attacker, your goal is to attack the Penance Fighters and Rangers, using any form of combat you so desire. If you decide to use range or magic, you will have to use the arrows/runes supplied to you.You also give and receive instructions to the Collector. As an attacker you can receive four options from the collector, they are:

Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of an Attacker
  • » Controlled, Wind, Bronze
  • » Accurate, Water, Iron
  • » Aggressive, Earth, Steel
  • » Defensive, Fire, Mithril

NamePictureCombat level (in order of waves 1-10)
Penance rangerPicture of Penance Ranger21, 25, 32, 38, 43, 51, 57, 64, 72, 57

If you do not use the right attacking method, you will not damage the Fighters and Rangers, and will be hit with recoil damage, which ranges from 10 to 50 life points. This also deducts points from your final score, so you should refrain from guessing the correct attack type. Always keep your menu in the attack type selection menu and keep auto retaliate off. When the type switches, change your attack style and do not attack until you receive instructions on what style to use. While you wait for the collector to shout what type of attack to use, go ahead and shout his egg colour.

As an attacker, you will be fighting the most and will require the most healing. It is a very good idea to stay near the healer at all times if you wish to survive and not lose the game for your team.

Attackers lose points by using the wrong fighting style. Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Defender
3.2 - Defender

The duty of the member assigned the Defender role is similar to luring, with their main opponent being the Penance Runners.

NamePictureLife points
Penance runnerPicture of Penance Runner50

The Defender will use the Defender item-dispenser, coloured blue, which gives Worms, Tofu and Crackers. You lure the Runners by laying the bait instructed by the healer in a trail to the trap, and wait for the Penance runner to be destroyed by it. The trap will need repairing with some logs and a hammer after it activates twice.

The Defender can also lay barricades with logs and a hammer (supplied in the room), in front of the Penance's cave, which will prevent them from coming in. Note that the barricades only last for a while.

Points are not lost if the wrong bait is used to lure the Runners. Defenders lose points by letting runners escape to the cave.
3.3 - Collector

As a collector, the main job is to pick up the Penance eggs, and load them into the egg launcher. These eggs come in three colours: blue, red and green, each with their own special effect. If you need to change the type of egg use the egg converter (Picture) located by the other machines (Note: not all the eggs will survive this process unless you are a level 5 collector). The eggs can be fired using the Egg Launcher (Picture). The egg launcher is used to kill the Penance Queen on the final wave. It also can be used on any of the penance creatures. The following table shows each egg and its effect when fired at the Penance:

Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Collector Picture Name Effect
Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Green Egg Green Egg Poisons the Penance. This poison damages over time.
Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Red Egg Red Egg Does damage to the Penance, between 30 and 40.
Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of a Blue Egg Blue Egg Stuns the Penance for a couple seconds and has a chance of dealing some damage

The Collector receives information on what egg to pick up from the Attacker. The Collector also relays information to the Attacker of what style to use when attacking the Penance. The Collector is the only one who can pick up eggs and if you pick up the wrong one, you will be dealt some damage. The collector loads the eggs into an Egg Launcher.

Collectors do lose points by attempting to collect the wrong egg.
3.4 - Healer

As a Healer it is your job to kill the Penance Healers and keep the other players alive.

Their job consists of replenishing the life points of the other team members so that no one dies during the game, and poisoning the Penance healers with poisoned food. The Healer has access to a unique item called the healing vial, which is used on the other team members to heal their life points should it be necessary. It is not capable of doing this until it is filled, which can be done by either using the vial on the Healing spring, located in the south side of the arena, or selecting the "Take-from" option provided by it. The spring also provides a "Drink-from" option for the Healer.

The Healer has a unique interface that tells him/her each team member's health (Picture).

The Defender will tell the Healer what poisoned food to use; tofu, crackers, or worms, of which he/she will use on the Penance Healers.

Healers lose points by using the wrong poison on the penance healers.

3.5 - The Queen

Half-way through the 10th wave, the Penance Queen will arrive through a trapdoor in the floor. She can attack several players at once with a ranged attack that can be very deadly for the unprepared. At first, her ranged attack will be slow but powerful. The more her health decreases, the faster her attack will get. This attack can hit anyone, anywhere; so the healer(s) will need to be wary of everybody's health, including their own.

To defeat the Penance Queen, your team must acquire Omega eggs, which is the only way of damaging the Queen. The steps to create the Omega egg are: Zybez RuneScape Help's Screenshot of an Omega Egg Proccess
  1. The Collector needs to get the yellow egg and give it to the Healer.
  2. The Healer needs to dunk the egg into the poison pool and then pass it on to the Attacker.
  3. The Attacker needs to attach spikes to the egg from the spiked mushroom and hand it off to the Defender.
  4. The Defender will now need to dunk the spiked egg into the Lava pools and hand it to the Collector.
  5. The Collector will then load the Omega egg into the Egg launcher and then the egg can be fired at the queen.
  6. Repeat until the Queen is dead.

Once your eggs are ready, you can begin your assault on the queen using the cannon. It will take 8 Omega eggs to kill the queen providing they are fired without large gaps to allow the queen to regain any life points. It is recommended to gather all the eggs in advance.
Once the Queen is dead, you will receive your reward in honour points, which are always constant at the end of the 10th round. You get 80 points in the role that you have chosen for that round, and 5 points for the other 3 roles.

4.0 - Strategy

Although the game may look easy to solo, it is impossible to win on your own. Your team will always need to help you and you will always need to help them by relaying messages, healing each other and, of course, defeating the penance. Teamwork is essential if you wish to defeat the Queen, where each part can only be done by a certain member. A tip for all roles: remember to shout out what's on the 'mouth' icon. It can be extremely frustrating if the person you need to call for doesn't know what they should do next.

For the most part, each role has a clear job. However, each and every one of the members of your team can use the egg launcher, which can poison, damage or stun all the Penance. This is usually the weapon that ends each wave, as wandering Penance Runner and Healers are usually the last to die. The egg launcher is also a crucial part to defeating the Penance Queen. When starting a wave, ALWAYS use the horn to call the right strategy and then collect the items you need. The following explains the best strategy, equipment and information for each role:

Attacker: As the attacker, your job will be fighting fighters and rangers, so if you are a team starter, finding high leveled players to be attackers is very important. Attackers are one of the easiest roles because the concept of the role is easy to grasp but it will also result in receiving a lot of the damage. Although it's suggested that the attacker stays in the middle, this way the penance will spread out, and it will be easier for the healer to heal the attacker. Armour with a high range and melee defence is ideal if you plan to tackle this role. A good tactic to staying alive is to avoid being swarmed, especially in later waves. Attackers will also need the most healing as they are on the front line. Attackers inform Collectors of what eggs to pick up from the corpses of the penance.

Note that if you are using an abyssal whip, you'll need to also bring a second weapon, preferably a weapon such as a dragon scimitar, or a Godsword if you can afford it.. The whip does not have an aggressive attack mode. When aggressive mode is called, switch to the weapon of choice that has an aggressive attack option. When the attack style changes, switch back to the whip. If you'd rather not deal with switching weapons, a good alternative weapon is Verac's flail, which supports all four attack styles.

Defender: The Defender must keep in constant touch with Healer, in order to know what type of food to drop. However, Penance runners may sometimes eat the incorrect food as if it was the correct food type. The defender will be running back and forth to the restocking machine Dependant on how much food is wasted. It is recommended that the defender has light armour such as dragon hide and boots of lightness. Since the runners are picky of their food, Defenders should leave a trail of their favoured food into the trap. The Runner may change its mind at the last minute, abandoning its path to the trap and sometimes ignoring what its preferred food is and continue to the trap. If the runner didn't die (usually for rejecting the food it has just eaten on or around the trap) then leave two or more of the favoured food on the trap, or stun the runner with the egg launcher. The runner will be distracted, so there's time for the trap to do its work. If you find it difficult to keep all the Penance runners close to the traps, especially in the later waves, then barricade off the two eastern caves where the runners and healers will appear from. Also, please note that there are two traps, which are able to kill two Runners before breaking. The Defender can take a log and hammer and repair the traps at any time.

The defender should collect Defender items, then drop the food with space in between which is equal to their lure range. When space is available, pick up the hammer and logs near the caves to the north to fix the traps when the Penance runners break them.
The traps can activate two times before they break, it is possible to kill multiple runners with one use of the trap if the Penance runners are occupying the same space and also try to eat the food by the trap at the same time.

Zybez RuneScape Help's Collector Screenshot

Healer: The Healer must keep all players alive. Also it is the Healers job to inform the defender about what food to drop and to kill the penance healers by feeding them poisoned food. Always start the game by calling the food to the defender, then collecting the healer materials, then filling the vial and then going for the Penance Healers immediately. Killing the healers is the main priority unless a player is at risk of dying, at which point the team mate should take priority. The best tactic for the healer is to make sure that team members run to the pool when they are low on life points, this way you can in a short amount of time fill your vial with healing potion and give it to the players in need of them.

Being a healer at wave 10 is probably one of the busiest jobs due to the Penance Queen's ability to attack all players at once, so it is advised to have a team with 2 healers to help keep team members alive.

Collector: The Collector must collect the dropped eggs and load them into the cannon. Playing collector in wave 1-9 is probably the easiest job. The most important job is to call the correct fight tactic to the Attacker as soon as it changes so the attacker can keep killing. In wave 10 the most important job is to collect around 8 yellow eggs and give them to the healers to start the process of making the Omega eggs. In wave 10, the Collector also places the Omega eggs in the cannon, this is vital to win the game.

Starting any game as a collector; start by calling the fight tactic and then follow the attacker in order to be close to the eggs that will be dropped. Red eggs are often considered the more important eggs as they can deal the most damage (3) and to multiple penance if they are in the same area. Blue eggs are often considered the most useless but are useful in helping a defender with stray runners. Be careful not to pick up the wrong eggs, or eggs when your inventory is full. The eggs will explode, dealing 50 damage

5.0 - Rewards

There are several rewards for this minigame which can be bought using your Role points and your selected Role points. The maximum amount of points you can have in each role is 500, then you will have to spend them to exhaust the amount. All rewards, including the gambling ones can be bought from Commander Connad near the entrance to the minigame arena.

5.3 - Extra Rewards

Commander Connad has some extra rewards apart from the armour and the weapons. With 200 points in a selected role, you can raise your level up to 2. With 300, you can get to level 3 in that role, 400 for level 4, and finally 500 for level 5.Having a higher level in role makes the role more efficient and increases your chance at winning waves. The following table shows the benefit of each level:

Role Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
Attacker +10 damage against Penance +20 +30 +40 +50
Defender Runner lure range 4 Lure range 5 Lure range 6 Lure range 7 Lure range 8
Collector Pouch holds 2 eggs Pouch holds 4 eggs Pouch holds 6 eggs Pouch holds 7 eggs Pouch holds 8 eggs
Healer 1 dose heals 100 life points 1 dose heals 150 life points 1 dose heals 200 life points 1 dose heals 250 life points 1 dose heals 350 life points

Apart from the levels, you can also choose to gamble your points. The first two gamble types, being Low-level which costs 10 honour points, and Medium-level which costs 20, give the possibility of winning a random item which is usually of a decent value. The High-level gamble, costing 30 honour points, gives not only better loot than the previous two levels, but also a chance of receiving a Dragon chainbody. The chances of receiving one is extremely slim, quoted to be 1 in 10000. It also requires the player to defeat the Queen.

Your abyssal whip can be painted by Commander Connad for only 50 honour points in a selected role. The choice of colours are: yellow, blue, green and white. Changing the colour of a whip will not affect its stat bonuses, so colouring these whips are only for cosmetic purposes. They also become untradeable once coloured, and can only be traded when the colour is removed. To remove the colours, simply use a cleaning cloth on the whip to revert it back to a red one.

The penance horn allows potential experience to be gained in Firemaking (by burning logs), Agility (by completing laps), and Mining (by mining ores) and can be claimed from Commander Connad for free. While wielding this horn with potential experience filled into it, double experience will be gained in the above skills. To fill the horn, you will need to play some rounds of Barbarian Assault to earn honour points, which will be converted into experience for your horn. Checking its potential by selecting its "Check-potential" option won't tell you precisely how much experience is left in it, but will give a general idea of how full it currently is, e.g. it may tell you that it is half-full.
This can be upgraded for free to a master horn, provided you have attained level 5 in any one of the four roles: Attacker, Defender, Healer, or Collector. It allows more potential experience to be filled at once, and allows you to perform an emote, where your character blows the horn, and icons of any roles you have achieved level 5 in will circle around you.
