Today I sat down with Runescape Dinasty (RSD), one of the oldest and respected clans in RuneScape. I found their IRC channel fairly tame, at least compared to Echo of Silence's from last week. RSD is a pretty old clan, but they're still active. The leader, Icedrop, is enthusiastic and full of energy after all these years and was more than happy to chat about RSD.
W13: RSD members, what are your positions?
Bakseris: RSD Member
Leosageheart: Special guest (I was RSD for a year and a half)
Helfrek: Was court just re-applied going through tm again now
P o o Pie: RSD applicant member (possibly full member)
xl_frozen_xl: RSD Member.
Fayro: RSD Elite Member.
Icedrop: Leader of RSD.
Bow: Co-leader of RSD.
W13: Tell me about RSD. What do people need to know about RSD?
Leosageheart: Cool, mature clan with great members and great community
Bakseris: RSD is one awesome clan with such a mature leader and team, and really cool members
Helfrek: RSD is probably one of the best communities that actually have a good mix of f2p and p2p pking
P o o Pie: Ive been in for a month and a couple weeks and I absolutely LOVE it. Great community. very f2p and p2p Based.
Icedrop: Well we've been around a long while so most people will know what RSD are about. We're a clan that does both F2P and P2P, have been around a long while and still uphold our values of respect. Anything more specific?
W13: Why did you pick to join RSD?
Helfrek: I actually went through all other clans before i picked carefully people, events, this was the most friendly and welcoming people
P o o Pie: I recently have just gotten back into the game and i chose RSD because of its elite clanning experience. RSD is also very diverse.
Bakseris: i choosen RSD couse of community and always wanted to be part of it
Leosageheart: Had a lot of friends, good honorable clan.
W13: How do other clans see RSD?
Leosageheart: through the scopes of their DDOS cannon
Helfrek: honest answer probably a threat. other clans hate the tight community and the fact we refuse to rise to flame bait.
xl_frozen_xl: alot of clans dislike us because we remain fairly neutral among alot of chaos between other clans but they know we are still a force to be reckoned with in the wilderness.
P o o Pie: i think other clans sees us as the underdog. we have stayed true through all chaos the clan world has been going through such as the crash wars etc.
Icedrop: Right now, I think other clans tend to like us. We generally treat others with respect so people give it back. I like to think we represent whats good with the clan world so people respect that too - low on the flames but when it comes to the business in the wilderness we always perform. Theres some people who will always hate RSD, its inevitable when we've been around so long and are still going while they've seen their own respective clans die various times.
Leosageheart: Both respected and hated imo, all top clans hate each other. its competition and they hate the other side.
W13: So what you're saying is that RSD is one of the more "respected" clans?
Helfrek: I would go so far as to say one of the most respectable clans
P o o Pie: yes, i would say most respected because of our neutrality and leadership.
W13: RSD has been around for a while, right? How's the activity? How many opts are you guys pulling these days?
Helfrek: The activity is awesome now and we usually pull 300 + opts for most fights prepped or unprepped. we pretty much pk daily in either p2p or f2p sometimes both
Bakseris: i would say activity is really good people glady go pking and we pull around 300 opts mostly
xl_frozen_xl: pretty great at the moment we are starting regularly with high ops, maintaining those ops throughout and often ending with more than we started and more and more often that is 100+ people on the field. Carrying that across timezones is more difficult but we manage to pull respectably on any prep in any timezone.
P o o Pie: the activity is amazing. between f2p and p2p events for all our timezones like est and gmt etc. and i can say we've been pulling 300+ opts. even if its prepped. we try to keep the clan active by signing up for events rather then not but we do have spur moments as well dont get me wrong.
W13: Tell me about a recent fight you had. What were your expectations and what happened?
Helfrek: TT uncapped last weekend
P o o Pie: i expected fighting VR but due to complications of DDOS it didnt happen.
Helfrek: We basically knew TT was going to be a challenge and pull great
Helfrek: they did first couple hours was even but we pulled it away after that and took control TT ended after 5 hours
Bakseris: yes fight with TT uncapped i thought TT will put really good show and it gona be realllyyyy long fight but we took advantage and won easy:P
Icedrop: RSD vs EoS F2P PKRI. It must have been a couple of weeks ago midweek. I was jokingly offering EoS handicap fights to try get a fight out of them. They turned right back at me and offered me an uncapped PKRI 30 minutes prep. At the time it was 2am for me, and I was up for work at 7:30am. But I decided to accept because I knew we needed something different for a challenge. We turned out pulling big and ending EoS in 2 hours. It shows sometimes you need to show confidence in your clan members despite your own situation.
W13: So, what does it take to be leader of RSD? Do you think you'll ever get there?
xl_frozen_xl: we had a big fight with TT on saturday, there was alot of hype among members of RSD and we knew it would be our biggest challenge for a long time and TT were more than capable of pulling off a brilliant performance and it was going to take 110% from every person possible. We managed to pull great for starting, both RSD and TT had strong starts and was hard to call but with time we managed to put a few things into effect and ma
Helfrek: We all like to think we have what it takes but RSD leaders have to have the right morals and judgement so to keep with the way RSD was built and has grown
Helfrek: The morals and respect has come over time and the leader has to carry on with the way RSD is meant to be
xl_frozen_xl: to lead RSD takes alot of commitment, time and effort as it would any clan. RSD has a long history and many members who have been here a long long time and any leader needs to be able to get on with and communicate well with all members or any age/race/religion and make sure they do everything they can to keep everyone happy but ensure they do their duty as a leader.
P o o Pie: i think it takes a load of amount of work to be the LEADERS of RSD. I think it takes alot of determination to do what our leader does. And no, i dont think ill get to leader but maybe a seat as a rank in the future=p
W13: Of course, Icedrop, you are already the leader but go ahead.
Icedrop: I originally became Co Leader when Livinlarge21 reopened RSD in 2005. When he stepped down in early 2008, myself and Mr 800 were originally going to do a joint leadership. But it turned out Mr 800 had to retire, so I was the obvious choice as leader given my experience as Co Leader.
Icedrop: Being Leader is different though, mainly because you assume ultimate responsibility. I think over the past 2 years I've learnt and like to think I've improved as a Leader. I think the main thing for any leader is to enjoy yourself and learn to deal with set-backs and just always aim to do what you can to improve your clan.
W13: So RSD sounds like a pretty strict clan. Do you guys get to let loose and joke around?
Helfrek: Yes it is a strict clan but only when it is needed. the audio and irc is always good fun and the members all have a good time.
xl_frozen_xl: yeah, everyone has alot of freedom and gets on really well. forums are always buzzing with banter and we have a really active public clan chat in game and no one really takes themselves too seriously so we can hang out and kick around messing about but everyone knows if they step out of line to an un-reasonable extent it will not go unnoticed or unpunished.
Helfrek: If we go out and no other clans out we have little fun trips where we try to make silly shapes in wild or inter clan fights for videos.
P o o Pie: RSD can be strict at times but we always loosen up on irc and teamspeak. we enjoy ourselves and know our boundaries. other clans think we dont enjoy ourselves but we really do.
Bow: they make fun of me all the time
Helfrek: we have a public RuneScape clan chat as well: RSDchat where all our members chill and the public is welcome.
xl_frozen_xl: RSD "law enforcment" works on a strike system and for way-out-of-line stuff you're going to get a strike.
W13: Which major clans do you NOT respect?
Bakseris: Vr, Rot
P o o Pie: vr,rot
Fayro: don't forget DK, no love for them
Bow: pretty much every clan but Titans
Helfrek: i dont actually have problems with any clan in paticular. we dont condone the way clans crash or ruin others' fights.
xl_frozen_xl: we respect clans who respect us, if other mainstream clans choose to disrespect us it's their choice and they can do as they please in public and we will continue to do our talking where it matters, on Ye Olde Runescape!
P o o Pie: the wilderness is where we do all the talkin. NOT in clw or bh or single strip.
Icedrop: I guess if you include dead clans, I don't respect DI. I respect what they were at one point looking back because of the individuals in the clan back then despite the fact they were assholes at the time. But as a clan, they inherited #1 from RSD and proceeded to lose grip gradually, losing their F2P stronghold to DS first, then gradually losing the rest bar the odd resurgence from time to time. They are a clan that is given alot more praise than deserved. Nowadays, I don't really think respect exists between many clans at all - former top clans more interested in crashing than good fights. I think lots of clans are as bad as each other. But all you can do is do your best to secure good fights for your own clan.
W13: What advice do you have for people looking to join a clan in RuneScape? What should they look for?
Fayro: they should find their niche and stick with it
Helfrek: A clan they can have fun in and what suits their time zone meet the people first and get a feel for it
Bakseris: I would recommend to not be shy and just to be yourself. thats all you need to do.
P o o Pie: i think they should choose a clan to overall appreciate them as members rather than numbers. and to make a bond with the comminuty. a clan should be almost like a HOME away from home in a way.
Fayro: these days people have trial or "future applicant" periods. Thats a great way to determine if the clan suits them. If it doesn't, just don't continue joining.
xl_frozen_xl: dont be a sheep and join a clan you've been told is the best clan ever. Do your homework and decide what type of people you want to be spendig your time with and how you want to spend that time playing Runescape with them because the clan you join greatly influences alot of things from your conduct to your activity on Runescape
Bow: just go where the fun is
W13: What sort of commitment do you have to make with RSD? Is it heavy on the pocket? Does it take up time?
Helfrek: Honestly yes and yes if you join any clan its going to take up time and money
Helfrek: but in RSD we have events for god wars, corp, etc. to help members make money for wars
P o o Pie: I think that is for each individual to decide. for those who are rich it's quite a bit easier to return in wars then those who are poor. I think you need to have some sort of a commitment to join any clan. depends how much you're willing to work for it.
Helfrek: the commitment we ask is just be there as long as you can and hybrid.
xl_frozen_xl: You have to be very committed to any clan if you really want to be there. There is always going to be some loss in that you will always die in fights but in RSD people are always doing other things to make back any money lost from godwars to pking for some fun in p2p or just straight up helping out a clan mate with a 76k.
Icedrop: RSD takes a lot of time. It is a clan that is fairly complex to run. That being said, I still have time to do a full time job and lead a decent social life too. Its all about time management, I personally spend most of my time online doing Leader related tasks so my sacrifice is not being able to train or do things on Runescape outside of events.
Icedrop: That being said, a lot of work is put in by all the Co Leaders, as well as all the other ranks in RSD. Every ranked member is important and RSD works well because of the combined efforts of them all
W13: How old are you guys? :D
xl_frozen_xl: 18
Bakseris: i am 19 year old
P o o Pie: i feel old... lol im 18
Helfrek: no comment =) Icedrop: 12 years older than what my RSC profile will tell you.
xl_frozen_xl: i have a question, when do you plan on joining RSD, W13? :)
W13: Let me handle the questions, xl_frozen_xl. ;-)
W13: Do you think RSD's mix of p2p and f2p is a reason why RSD has been around so long and is still stable today?
Fayro: not the main reason, but it helps I'm sure
Helfrek: I think RSD is around due to its ability to adapt to change and keep up with the differences on rs and in wild
Bakseris: Nah i would not say that. I think RSD is still around so long because of dedicated members and leaders.
Icedrop: We get bad press because we do both. Logically, people may think we're half as active as those specialising in either, but if you check the Clan Fights section on RSD's forums, you'll see we probably do just as much F2P as a F2P-only clan, and as much P2P as a P2P-only clan. So, in a way, we are twice as active as most clans.
Icedrop: But ultimately it benefits us. There are not many clans who do a mix of both like us, so if people like them both, we are often an obvious choice when choosing a clan.
W13: Do you think other clans dislike RSD for mixing p2p and f2p?
Helfrek: definatly alot of clans are a little green at the fact we do well in both
xl_frozen_xl: i think some people might be a little jealous that their clan might not do both, when they feel they maybe could but i dont think its a big thing really
Helfrek: i know alot of them i speak to say they wish their clans did the same
Fayro: a lot of clans envy our success
W13: Okay, c'mon... I'm sure there's SOMETHING bad about RSD. Give me the dirt :-D
Leosageheart: Bow's sister is hot.
Bow: I regret ever posting my family picture....
xl_frozen_xl: we are terrible at castle wars!
P o o Pie: i think the only bad thing about RSD is that we end pk trips too early :(
Helfrek: Most of our members have pretty big banks (other clans say its like fort knox) just like to say most of them built their banks with RSD
W13: Thanks a lot for taking the time out for this interview, guys!
