Anti-Dragonbreath Shield is a must. Whip or Dragon scimitar along with Dragon dagger(p) is recommended. You can also Range them from across the Lava in the Red Dragon Isle, located in the wilderness. Beware of Revenant Ghosts while you are out there.
Red dragons will also drop Red dragon tail-bones during the wish list at the end of the quest
Fur 'n' Seek. They will not drop this item before you start it or after you finish it.
Tactics
Like all Dragons, you will need to bring your anti-dragon shield if you're using melee to fight them. Alternatively, you can range and mage them behind the obstacles that restrict the Dragons attack.
