Part 1:
The Papers
Step 1
Talk to Rat Burgiss.
Kill 5 outlaws, take papers.
Talk to Burgiss.
Deliver letter to Surok Magis.
Speak to Rat Burgiss (Picture) who will tell you that he was attacked by outlaws that took some important papers. Tell him you will get them back for him and that you want to help. He will tell you that they took five papers and went to the north-west, you will also get a folder to put the papers in. To get the papers you will have to kill five outlaws (Picture) (one for each paper).
The outlaws are level 46 with 200 life points and are located near Lucien's home from the Temple of Ikov quest. You can reach them quickly from Varrock by going to the north-west corner of city's wall near the Grand Exchange, and going under the wall (Level 21 Agility required). If you don't remember, the house is next to the river running between Varrock and Edgeville, on the otherside of the fence above the brass key cave. Once you have killed five outlaws and gathered all the papers put them into the folder.
Return to Rat Burgiss who will ask you to deliver a letter to Surok Magis in the Varrock Library. The message has been decrypted by 22367rh, below:
Part 2:
The Wand
Step 2
Speak to Surok Magis.
Get to the Chaos Altar.
Infuse the wand and head back to Magis with a bowl.
Surok will ask for your help in gathering materials for a spell that will turn clay into gold. He asks for an ordinary bowl and a metal wand infused with chaos magic. He will give you a metal wand and tell you how to infuse it with chaos magic. You also receive a diary from him and are told to look in the library for an old tome, titled Dagon'hai history. Between these two items you decipher that the Saradomin statue outside of north-east Varrock covers a tunnel. If you have problems finding the statue, simply exit the east side of Varrock and follow the path up to the statue.
Option 1: The Shortcut (42 Mining Required)
Bring the 15 chaos runes, chaos talisman, the metal wand and a bronze pickaxe with you, and go to the Saradomin statue and talk to Anna Jones. If you do not have the pickaxe, talk to Anna and she will give you one. Excavate the tunnel by clicking on the statue, after a brief cut-scene you will see a tunnel in the base of the statue.
Enter the tunnel and you are in the shortcut to the Chaos Altar. You can speak to the three members of the Dagon'hai here although only Dakh'thoulan Aegis will answer you in a manner you comprehend. Head to the end of the tunnel and enter the portal to be teleported to the Chaos Altar (Picture). You still have to navigate the area as you normally have to although you are much closer to the altar then if you had entered in the wilderness. Head down the ladder to the north-west and you will be near the chaos altar. Use the wand with the altar to infuse the wand.
Option 2: The Abyss (access to the Abyss required)
Enter the Abyss north of Edgeville with 15 chaos runes, and the metal wand. Navigate to the chaos rift. Once in the Chaos Altar area navigate to the Chaos Altar and use the wand with it to infuse the wand.
Option 3: The Long Way (no shortcuts)
Enter the Chaos Altar area from the Wilderness. Navigate to the Chaos Altar and use the wand with it to infuse the wand (Picture).
Return to Surok with the wand and the empty bowl and he will give you a letter to take to Rat Burgiss.
Part 3:
The VPSG
Step 3
Bring the new letter to Burgiss.
Speak to Zaff.
Attempt to arrest Magis.
Fight the King until almost dead, operate beacon ring.
Bring the letter to Rat Burgiss and he will reveal to you what is going on. Surok is attempting to use a spell to control the King of Varrock and Rat Burgiss is actually a part of the Varrock Palace Secret Guard (VPSG). Rat Burgiss asks you to talk to another operative, Zaff, of the Varrock staff shop, to help stop Surok.
Tell Zaff that Rat Burgiss sent you and he will give you a set of instructions and a Beacon Ring to call him should Surok manage to control the King, you are to summon him when the King is almost dead.
Go to Surok and arrest him, he has already taken control of the King and the King (Level-47) attacks you (Picture). When the King is about dead a message will appear in the your chatbox saying that it would be a good time to summon Zaff. When you get this message operate the ring (right-click operate) and Zaff will appear and a cut-scene will follow.
Return to Rat Burgiss to collect your reward.

Part 1:
The Hunt for Surok
Step 1
Speak to Surok.
Follow him into cave.
Head into first western chamber.
Speak to dragon'hai member.
Enter portal.
Surok Magis, the darkened Zamorak mage who was captured during What Lies Below quest has managed to escape! Players can find this villain to the east of Varrock, standing next to the statue of Saradomin that you tunnelled through during the quest.
Speak to Surok and he will run into the tunnels in order to escape. Follow him into the cave, and you will see him entering a portal. Run north and head into the first western chamber.
Speak to the Dagon'hai member there and then enter the portal next to him (not the portal far north, which leads to the Chaos altar and requires a Chaos talisman).
Part 2:
The chase is on!
Step 2
Follow the steps to find Surok.
After going into the portal after Surok, you will arrive in a room of the Chaos Tunnels filled with ants. You will now need to run between the many chambers of the Chaos Tunnels to pursue Surok.
You will sometimes see footprints leading it to a portal if Surok has recently passed through it. This always means that he has gone that way, but to reach Surok you will have to pass through "unmarked" portals as well. Please note that if you exit, die or teleport out of the Chaos Tunnels you will need to start this hunt all over again.
Below is a list of rooms, what's in them, and which portal you should take from there.
- Giant ant workers, take northern portal.
- Giant ant workers, take north-eastern portal.
- Giant crypt rat, take closest western portal.
- Big wolves, take most northern portal.
- Cave bugs, take far west portal.
- Deadly red spiders, take most northern portal.
- Moss giants, take most southern portal.
- Fire giants, take western portal.
- Zamorak warriors, Zamorak mages and Zamorak rangers, take most southern portal.
- Fire giants, take western portal.
- Zamorak warriors, take the south-western portal.
- Zamorak mages and Zamorak warriors, take portal just south from the one you came out of.
- Moss Giants, take the western portal.
- Skeletons and Zombies, go south-east and enter the portal there.
- Gargoyles and Mummies, take north-western portal.
- Monks of Zamorak, enter the north-eastern portal.
- Dust Devils, enter the portal just north-west from the one you came out of.
- Black Demons, enter the south-western portal.
- Earth Warrior and Bronze Dragons, take the north-eastern portal.
- Turoths, take the north-eastern portal.
- Waterfiends, take the north-eastern portal.
- Bronze Dragons and Fire Elementals, take the western portal.
- Nechryaels, take the western portal.
- Dagannoths, this is the last room.
- Bork's Lair, the northern portal.
Step 3
Kill Bork.
Bork can be killed again and again, but for less Slayer XP. You receive the same amount of charms though.
Once you have reached the final room, Surok will turn to face you (Picture). He will summon Bork (level-267) and will retreat to the edge of the cavern. Bork is capable of summoning Ork Legionnaires (level-70) and can do considerable melee damage.
Note: It is suggested to turn on the Protect from Melee and pot up before fighting him. You may need to take a Prayer restore potion first as running through the caverns and the shadow spider rooms will have drained you a bit.
Good armour should protect you fairly well against the minions he summons, as most strong armours offer a high Summoning defence bonus. Surok will cast spells on you now and again from the sidelines - his attacks will probably do the most damage to you. Once you have slain Bork you will receive 5000 - 10000 coins, some charms (7 Crimson, 5 Blue, 2 Green) and 5,000 Slayer XP. Surok will teleport and escape your grasp though.
After the mini quest you can return to the last chamber daily and slay Bork again. You will receive 250 slayer experience, but the same number of charms is always guaranteed making it quite worthwhile for able players.
A: The only stat bonus that the Beacon Ring gives you are a +2 to your magic attack, and +1 to your magic defence.
A: No, if you try to do this you will find that Surok and Bork are not in the right room. The only way you can complete this for the first time is to follow Surok and enter from the statue and follow the correct path stated earlier.
