Part 1:
Ensign to a Captain
Step 1
Go to Entrana and offer to help Auguste.
Obtain the items listed.
Travel to Entrana from Port Sarim, ensuring you are not
wearing any armour or wielding any weaponry. You can bring your amulet of glory and runes for teleportation. Once you arrive on the island head to the north of the building with the glassblowing pipe and speak to Auguste. Auguste is an aspiring balloonist who wishes to explore new frontiers. He needs a skilled assistant to help him build his balloon. Select 'Yes! Sign me up.' and he will show you the blueprint for his balloon (Picture).
Auguste briefly explains the basic science to you in which hot air rises higher than cooler air. He wants to sew a giant sack and light a fire underneath it to fill the balloon and lift the basket up into the air. You will need to bring to him three sheets of papyrus, one ball of wool, one full sack of potatoes and one unlit candle.
You can obtain an unlit candle by going to the church on the eastern side of the island. Successfully stealing a candle will get you 20 Thieving XP. The ball of wool and the papyrus can be bought in the Adventurer's Shop in East Ardougne. The sack of potatoes can be obtained by buying an empty sack from a Farming shop and picking your own potatoes from a field either outside Lumbridge or north of Ardougne or by getting them from a larder in a player's house.
Step 2
Talk to Auguste.
Create the balloon.
Talk to Auguste again.
With all your material collected, head back to Entrana and speak to Auguste again. He will now ask you to create an origami balloon by using a sheet of papyrus on the ball of wool. The papyrus is folded into a box while the yarn will support the heat source (Picture). Once this is done, use the unlit candle with the paper balloon to act at the heat source (Picture).
After you create the origami balloon, speak to Auguste again. A cut-scene will begin in which you light the candle in the origami balloon. It briefly floats up into the air (Picture) before the paper catches fire and is destroyed in a ball of flame. Auguste is pleased by the results of the experiment despite your logic.
Step 3
Give the items to Auguste.
Talk to him again after the balloon is destroyed.
Speak to Auguste again. He will ask you if you have the other two sheets of papyrus and the sack of potatoes. Select 'Yes, I have them here.' This time Auguste will take the items and another cut-scene will begin. Auguste's experimental balloon does quite well except that it too is destroyed, this time by a group of Entrana farmers (Picture).
Speak to Auguste again. He explains that the group of peasants is the flash mob phenomenon who appear only to smite those who question the gods. Auguste is satisfied with the two experiments and is ready to create the real balloon. He will need the following items: yellow and red dye, ten pieces of silk, a clay bowl, and eight sandbags. This will be enough time in order to grow a willow tree. He will hand you a willow sapling and a basket of apples to pay the farmer who watches the allotment you choose. He needs you to cut twelve branches from the willow tree using a pair of secateurs and use the branches on the metal frame of the platform to make the basket.
Note: If you lose the sappling Auguste gives you, you absolutely have to pay the 30,000gp to get another. You cannot plant a regular Willow Sappling to get the branches from. Also, you might not be able to get all the branches all at once. In which case, wait a while and come back.
Part 2:
Engineering Department
Step 4
Obtain the necessary items.
Give the items to Auguste and use the branches on the basket.
In order to obtain the red and yellow dye you will need to speak to the Witch Aggie in Draynor Village and give her three redberries (found south-east of Varrock) and two onions (picked in Lumbridge due east from Draynor Village near the beginning of "Sheep Shearer") and ten gold pieces. Alternatively, if you started Mourning's Ends Part I, you can use the teleport crystal to teleport to Isafdar and Lletya and purchase the dyes from the Oronwen's shop in the north-west corner of the Elven Village.
The pieces of silk can either be thieved from the silk carts in Ardougne or purchased from the silk trader in Al Kharid. The clay bowl can be crafted by mining clay south-west of Varrock using a water-filled jug on the hard clay and crafting the bowl in the Barbarian Village to the west. There is also a bowl spawn in the upstairs room of the building in Entrana that has the glassblower spawn. The eight sandbags can be obtained by purchasing nine empty sacks from any Farming shop and then using each sack on the sandpit to the south of Auguste (or any other sandpit in the game).
The willow branches involve you growing a willow tree from the sapling that Auguste provides you. Be warned that if you lose the sapling, you will need to pay Auguste 30,000 gold pieces to obtain a new sapling. Head to any tree allotment and plant the sapling. Once the sapling is planted, you will be informed that you cannot obtain another sapling from Auguste. You must now wait roughly three and a half hours for this tree to grow. Be certain to pay the gardener the basket of apples you received to watch the tree. Once the tree grows, use your secateurs on the tree and collect twelve branches. Alternatively, you can buy the willow branches from the Grand Exchange, instead of planting them.
Return to Auguste on Entrana and talk to him to hand him the dye, the bowl, the pieces of silk and the sandbags. Return to the bank and withdraw the willow branches. When you return to Auguste, use the willow branches on the basket. Auguste will handle the bulk of the work. After a brief cut-scene, the balloon will be completed.
Part 3:
To Boldly Go...
Step 5
Talk to Auguste.
Do the puzzle.
Speak to Auguste. He will inform you that the balloon is ready for its maiden voyage and you'll be piloting it. In order to fly the balloon, you will need ten normal logs to act as fuel and a tinderbox since Auguste does not have one with him. If you have these items with you, go ahead and click 'Okay' to begin the balloon puzzle. Essentially, the wind will always move you one space to the right regardless of whether you move upwards or downwards.
The object of the puzzle is to avoid everything (including the clouds). Clicking the log icon will move the balloon upward one space while clicking a sandbag will move you upward two spaces. You only have ten logs and eight sandbags so you must use them wisely. Clicking the normal rope will lower the balloon by one space; the red emergency rope will lower the balloon by two spaces. You can use the ropes as often as you like. The relax button will move you once space to the right without moving up or down.
Step 6
Click the necessary things explain to the right.
Speak to Auguste.
For the first stage, click the sandbag
and the log icons to move your balloon up three spaces. Now click Relax nine times. Now click the normal rope icon three times to move between the clouds and birds and finally click Relax repeatedly until you reach the right-hand side of the screen (Picture).
For the second stage, click Relax three times and then click a sandbag to move quickly upward. Now click Relax seven times, click the log icon to climb slightly over the roof of the building and then click Relax until you reach the end of the stage.
For the final stage, click Relax seven times. This will place you in a tight position. Click the red rope to dive sharply and then a normal rope and Relax three times. To finish the puzzle, click the log icon to climb up, the normal rope once to descend again and then Relax four times (Picture).
You will find yourself in Taverley to the right of the tree allotment. Speak to Auguste and he will congratulate you for a successful voyage! In return for your help, he will provide you with a flight helmet and jacket and the ability to use the balloon to travel to distant locations.

A: You can not. It will take roughly four hours for the tree to grow. Make certain you pay the gardener with the basket of apples you received from Auguste.
A: If you have other fully grown willow trees planted, you can teleport between locations and use your secateurs to collect branches. It takes roughly five minutes for each tree to regrow a cut branch. You can also purchase willow branches from other players but prepare to be overcharged.
A: After completing the quest, use a piece of papyrus on a ball of wool to make the unfinished balloon and then use an unlit candle on this to complete the balloon. You may use bottles of dyes on the balloon to change it into another colour. You must use a tinderbox on the balloon to set it afloat.
A: For each balloon destination you need to complete a balloon travel puzzle. Once done, you can go to and from Entrana, Crafting Guild, Taverley, Varrock, Castle Wars and the Grand Tree
A: Yes, you can buy the willow branches from other players or the Grand Exchange.
