The Rune guardians
Step 1
Head to the Mage Training Arena
Speak with Apprentice Clerval
Speak with Wizard Dougal
Head to the basement of the Mage Training Arena and speak with Apprentice Clerval. He says that he is fascinated with Rune guardians, and wants to make one. However, he needs your help. Agree to help him, and he tells you to speak to Wizard Shug, Edvin, and Dougal. Dougal and Edvin are located in the nearby rooms in the basement, while Shug is upstairs with the Rewards Guardian.
When you try to speak with Wizard Dougal, he goes on a rant and barely lets you get a word through. He first accuses you of being another incompetent apprentice, and then of spying on him for the other wizards. He then claims that he made the Rune guardians all by himself. Compliment him to get him to tell you more. He mentions that you need to craft 5 Mind, Body, and Steam runes. He will agree to help you make them, and he will give you a Fire talisman, a Water talisman, a Binding necklace, and 10 noted Pure essence; unnote these at the bank chest in the Duel Arena. You can search the bookcase directly across from Wizard Dougal's room to get a book on combination Runecrafting.
Part 2:
The process
Step 2
Speak with Wizard Edvin.
Complete grid challenge
Point
Next, speak with Wizard Edvin. He agrees to help you out, and will give you a tool to shape the guardian if you agree to test out a puzzle of his. He will then teleport you into a large puzzle full of little rooms with portals in them. The objective is to get to the room in the north side with a green marking on the floor, starting from the south. The shape on the floor is the direction that your character will travel in.
If it is a big square, you will always go to the adjacent room. A small square will send you to the room directly to your north. A plus sign will send you to the end of the row of rooms. A diagonal line will send you to the end of the row of diagonal rooms. The tetris like sign will send you 3 rooms to the side and 1 room up or down, depending on the direction of the shape.
To complete the puzzle from the start, go:
- West, and you will end up in the room just west.
- North, and you will go the the room just north.
- North, and you will go the the room just north, again.
- North once more to get to the room with the green marking.
Once you complete it, use the switch in the corner of the room to exit. Edvin then explains to you that their Rune guardians are based on the golems from Uzer, and that the wizards have replaced the clay with rune essence, giving them instructions with magic. He will give you a tool to shape their bodies, named Edvin's tool (Picture).
Step 3
Speak with Wizard Shug
Talk to Wizard Dougal
Talk to Apprentice Clerval
Operate workbench
Speak with Apprentice Clerval again
Fix wires on table
Talk to Apprentice
Finally, Wizard Shug can be found on the top floor of the building. When you talk to him, if you don't have 5 Pizazz points, he will tell you that you need to get them. You can do various activities in the Mage Training Arena to get these points. When you have them, he will tell you that he came up with a way to enchant Emeralds on their own, and that there is a workbench in the basement that you can use to do the same. He tells you that you will also need 20 Pure essence. At this point you should go craft the steam runes for Wizard Dougal. The easiest way to do this is to grab 5 Water runes and 5 Pure essence out of the bank, and run to the Fire altar. Make sure to equip the binding necklace, as there is a chance of failure if it is not worn. Then, use the Water runes on the Fire altar.
Once you have the 2 Emeralds, 20 Rune essence, and the 5 Mind, Body, and Steam runes, head back down to the basement. Speak with Wizard Dougal and show him the Steam runes you crafted. Operate the workbench behind Clerval to enchant the Emeralds, and then speak with him again. He says that you will need to fix the wires on the animation table before you can make the guardian.
You will need to fit the pieces together so that the wires connect on both sides (Picture). Once you fix the table, talk to Apprentice Clerval again. You will discover that Clerval was unable to craft the guardian pieces. Offer to help him to receive Edvin's tool and a Rune essence that has been crafted partway through. Carve the guardian pieces by using Edvin's tool with the special Rune essence he gives you, and give the pieces back to Clerval by using those on him. A cutscene will be played, where the Rune guardian is brought to life by the machine. Congratulations, Quest Complete!
