Having awoken from her sleep, Senliten, the Pharaoh Queen, can sense that something is missing from the desert. That 'something' isn't water, vegetation or a sense of right and wrong: it's monkeys! Generations ago, when Apmeken, the monkey god, roamed the desert, monkeys were as common as a blackjack mugging in the desert; but when she left the desert, the monkeys left too. Can you convince Awowogei to send a colony of simians to the desert? And how will they fare in a climate where even the hardiest of adventurers have perished?

Part 1:
Apmeken the monkey god

Step 1
Talk to Leela in Draynor Village
Head to Senliten's tomb
Speak with Senliten
Agree to help
Head to Sophanem

Items needed: Pet cat, Waterskin (4) or Enchanted water tiara

Head to Draynor village and talk to Leela, who is located north-west of the Draynor Jail just east of the village. She will say that she wishes to see Senliten in person and was just on her way to go see her. Agreeing that you will go with Leela to see her will take you directly to the temple of Senliten and to the start of the quest. Talk to Senliten. She will inform you about the monkey god Apmeken and tell you how monkeys used to populate the desert and their importance there being as much as that of the cat. Agree to help her and begin the quest.

If you have already talked to Jex and the Sphinx about the minor god Apmeken, then this part of the quest does not need to be done and this section should be ignored.

She will tell you to head to Sophenam and find out what you can learn about Apmeken by asking the people there. Use the right-click option on Leela to easily leave the temple and then head south-west towards Sophanem. Have your cat follow you and talk to the Sphinx located in the middle of the town (note that the Amulet of catspeak is not needed for this conversation) and ask about Apmeken. Once you've asked all the questions available about the god, speak to Jex who is located on the north-east side of town and ask him about minor gods, then all the questions possible about Apmeken. Once this is done, make your way back to Senliten's temple.

Part 2:
Ape Atoll monkey recruitment

Step 1
Speak to Senliten
Head to Ape Atoll
Speak to the three wise monkeys in the temple
Complete the green bananas puzzle
Talk to King Awowogei about a new monkey colony for choc-ice trading

Items needed: Coins or a M'speak mould, M'speak amulet, Monkey greegree (any form), Ape Atoll teleport runes (optional). Save around 20 inventory spaces before you proceed

Speak to Senliten. She will tell you that she would like to re-populate the desert with a colony of monkeys to please the god Apmeken. Make your way to Ape Atoll either by teleporting there using the regular Magic spellbook or by making your way there through the usual route (heading to the Grand Tree, talking to Daero, etc.). Once in Ape Atoll, talk to the three wise monkeys in the temple located in the north-eastern part of the island.

Note: When entering the temple during this step, a cutscene-like environment will ensue as part of the quest and fighting Monkey guards will not be available to the player until after completing this section of the quest.

Ask the monkey's about Apmeken and they will ask how you know about the god yourself, admit to them you are a human and they will ask for proof. You can't show them with the nearby monkey guard watching, so go to the barrel of green bananas (in the north-east corner of the temple) and grab as many bananas as you can. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of an annotated map showing the banana trail to make

The objective is to lure the monkey guard towards the barrel of bananas. In order for you to do this, you must lure the monkey right around the edge of the inside of the building using these Green bananas. If you drop one too close to a gorilla Monkey guard, it will eat the dropped banana instead. Make sure you drop them within 3-4 spaces of each other in order to keep the monkey guard following your trail. If he does not see the next banana in the trail, he will move straight back to the start. Note that if a banana is left on the floor for too long, it will turn brown and mouldy, so make sure you begin to lure the guard whenever possible.

Once you have lured the monkey right the way around to the crate of bananas, return to the elder monkeys to prove you are human. Speak to them and they will ask that you remove your greegree. After doing so, equip it again and once again speak to them. They will ask that you speak to the king about making a monkey colony in the desert. Exit the building and head just south towards King Awowogei's throne room.

Speak to the Gorilla guard to enter and speak with the king. After insisting on the desert as the new colony location, state that the desert has a lot of items there which can be traded and when asked what kind of items, select choc-ices. The king will say that he wants a choc-ice in the shape of a monkey and tells you to bring this to him in order to continue the deal. Before leaving the island to get this choc-ice, make sure you go to the Crafting store located just west of the temple where you spoke to the three monkeys in order to buy a M'speak amulet mould as you'll need it.

Part 3:
Choc-ice delivery for the King

Step 1
Speak to Rokuh for a special choc-ice
Get to Nardah

Items needed: Runes for around 50-100 Ice spells (from Ancient spellbook; the better Ice spell you can cast, the easier this task will be), at least 1000 Coins (advised to bring more in case you fail), Super energy potions (or any other form of run energy restoration), M'speak amulet, Monkey greegree (any), food, armour, Antipoison potion, Enchanted Tiara/Waterskins (optional), Prayer potions (optional), Dramen/Lunar Staff (optional to teleport to Nardah through fairy ring code DLQ)

Note: If you do not have the Ancient spellbook activated at this point, you will need to make your way to Azzanadra's pyramid and turn them on for this part of the quest. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a Chimp-ice on the floor

Make your way to Nardah and speak with Rokuh the choc-ice seller and ask him if he could possibly make a choc-ice shaped like a monkey's head. He will say that it is possible but he needs some form of mould for the choc-ice, and will ask for 1000 coins for it. Apparently, the major flaw in the design of the choc-ice is that it can not hold itself together in this form and will melt within seconds if you do not refreeze it. He'll also state that if any form of teleportation is used whilst holding the choc-ice, it will instantly melt from the force. The forms of teleportation that this includes are:

  • Spellbook teleportations
  • Gnome gliders
  • Fairy rings
  • Jewellery teleports
  • Grand seed pods

This does, however, mean that you can still use the charter boat system, other standard boat systems, and the Eagle transportation system. Because there are eagles in the alcove located north of Nardah, using this is the easiest method of getting to Ape Atoll.

It is advised to read the next section of the guide before making your way to Ape Atoll with the choc-ice as you will more than likely not have time to do so during this part of the quest.

Once you have your choc-ice, make sure you constantly check the chatbox to see the choc-ice's status. How much it has melted will be displayed by three different messages: "The Choc-ice is beginning to melt", "The choc-ice has nearly melted", and "The choc-ice has completely melted". In order to re-freeze the choc-ice, you will need to 'place' (left-click) it in your inventory which will place it on the floor. After, use your Ice spell on it to re-freeze it, and you will automatically pick it back up.

Important: Ice rush does NOT work in refreezing it. Using the best Ice spell you can cast will be easier for this task as the better the spell, the longer it will be kept frozen.

Step 2
Get to Ape Atoll

Run as far north as possible from Nardah until you see an entrance for the desert eagle transport system. Upon entering the cave, pick up a rope if you haven't got one already and use it on the eagle. This will take you to Eagle's peak, so make sure you do not use your rope on any of the other eagles. It may be advisable to freeze your choc-ice before using this transportation as you can not freeze it during the flight.

Walk through the stone door, then head north-west to the exit (this is west of the book on the floor). Once outside the entrance to Eagle's peak, run south-east towards the Tree Gnome Stronghold and make your way towards the Grand Tree. Go to the first floor using the ladder and then east towards the bar to talk to Daero. Talk to him to go to the glider base, Waydar to reach Crash Island, and finally Lumdo to go to Ape Atoll.

Once on Ape Atoll, if your choc-ice happens to melt, you can obtain another one from Lumdo who is by the boat, so consider this a checkpoint (phew!). Head west from the boat and watch out for spiders which may poison you while trying to freeze your choc-ice.

Step 3
Get to King Awowogei

The following part is the hardest part of this trip, so be careful. Freeze your choc-ice in a safe area where you won't be attacked and are not too close to the archers by the gate, then equip your greegree and run north through the gate. Once through, run further north away from the archers and once again re-freeze your choc-ice. It's advised to stay as a human while running through the town, turning on a Ranged protection Prayer as you do so to protect yourself from the monkey archers.

Run through the town and re-freeze your choc-ice while stood east of the king's throne room before using your Monkey greegree and entering the the throne room to talk to Awowogei. He will show his appreciation and give you a Barrel of monkeys to take to the colony. Before leaving, visit the three wise monkeys and they will also jump in the barrel of monkeys.

Part 4:
Colony carpet route

Step 1
Go to Ali Morrisane
Speak to Ava for an alerter
Search for a metal box

Required items: Ava's accumulator, Ring of Charos, Waterskins/Enchanted water tiara (optional), Shanty pass/Coins, Spade, teleportation to Shantay Pass and Draynor Village (Amulet of glory recommended), weapon

The monkeys will tell you that they need to be taken to a rock shaped like a camel's hump. The area they are referring to is located just south-west of the Desert mining camp. Make your way there then into the desert and run south towards the camp. Carry on south-west from there until you reach a clearing within two hills which are shaped like a camel's hump. Clicking on the barrel of monkeys will release them into the area, along with the three wise monkeys. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a map showing the colony's precise location

Talk to any of the monkeys and they will tell you that they would like a magic carpet route set up to the camp. In order to do this, you should speak to Ali Morrisane who can be found by his stall in Al Kharid north of the palace. With your Ring of Charos equipped, talk to him and charm him into telling you more about his carpets. He'll tell you that he has lost a carpet in a metal crate somewhere in the desert and that you should seek out the assistance of Ava in order to find them. With Ava's accumulator, go to Draynor Manor and find Ava in her room by pulling the lever by the door.

Ask her about upgrading the accumulator to find metal objects and she will ugrade your accumulator to Ava's alerter. She then asks you to test this device out in the manor and come back to her. Make your way to the back of the manor and grab the Spade near the exit if you don't have one. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of the precise location of Ava's metal crate

The way the alerter works is that in the chat box you will see the word "Bwuk!". The more "Bwuk"s you get, the closer you are to the item. The exact location of the box is between the the trees directly north-east of the manor's fountain by a few steps. Use your spade to dig up the crate and then return to Ava who will congratulate you for your efforts. You can then return to the desert to start looking for the other crates.

Step 2
Search for the other metal crates in the desert

These crates can be located just south-west of the Shanty Pass entrance, so make your way through Shantay Pass and then run south-west to start locating the crates. There will be 5 crates in all: one is empty, one contains a Waterskin (4) and 5 noted Waterskins (4), one contains an uncut Sapphire and Emerald, one contains an uncut Ruby and a Diamond, and the final crate contains Bundles of carpets. Keep these gems as they will be needed later in the quest. When discovering some of the crates, a level 41 Scarab may appear and after killing these, digging again will uncover the crate. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of the map showing the crates' whereabouts

The location of these crates are apparently specific to the same locations for each player. By travelling around the area from east of the Bedabin Camp, north of the monkey colony and west of the Bandit Mining camp, you should be able to find all of the crates with relative ease. Once you have found the carpet, head back to the three wise monkeys and they will set up the carpet link between Shantay Pass and the monkey colony. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of the dialogue received upon finding Ali's carpets

Part 5:
Establishing the colony

Step 1
Set up the monkey colony

Items required: Spade, Saw, Hammer, 10 Bolt of cloth, Rope, 6 Teak Planks, Desert shirt, Desert robe, Desert boots, 10 Bananas, Uncut sapphire, Uncut emerald, Uncut ruby, Uncut diamond, 3 Knife, 3 Waterskin (4) (bring more in case you drink from one), Enchanted water tiara/Waterskins (optional), Coins/Shantay pass

After setting up the carpet route, the monkeys will then say that they need to set up a proper colony with market stalls and a place to live and will give you the Colony book for dummies which you should quickly read through. In order to set up the colony to a sufficient level, they will ask that you build three market stalls: a gem stall, general stall, and banana stall, as well as a tent. Head back to Shantay Pass via the new carpet system and withdraw a Hammer, Saw, Spade, 10 Bolts of cloth, Rope, 6 Teak planks, and the uncut gems from the crates, then head back to the camp.

Once back at the camp, use your Spade on the rubble piles to clear them, and on each of the three rectangular areas, build stalls which will use up your Teak planks and some of the Bolts of cloth. On the square area on the south-eastern side, build a tent which will use the remaining cloth and the Rope in your inventory. With the gems in your inventory, click one of the stalls to build a gem stall. Teleport to a bank once more and collect the Desert robes, Knives, Waterskins, and Bananas. All of these items, excluding the Bananas, can be bought at Shantay Pass if you do not have them at this point. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a completed monkey colony

Head back once more and set up a general stall and banana stall in the same way as the first few stalls, and then talk to the three wise monkeys. They will tell you they are happy with the stalls but will complain that they require protection as the monkey guards do not have any weapons in which to defend the colony. They will ask that you obtain 6 Monkey knives for the guards.

Step 2
Go to Ape Atoll
Steal 6 Monkey knives

Items required: Gorilla greegree, teleportation to Ape Atoll, food (optional), desert survival gear (optional), Coins/Shantay pass

At this point, you may wish to deactivate Ancient Magicks if you haven't done so already in order to teleport to Ape Atoll. With your Gorilla greegree, head to Ape Atoll and make your way to the building just east of where the monkey child holding the talisman is. You will find Monkey knife fighters which can now be pickpocketed for Monkey knives. Punch the monkeys and pickpocket them whilst they are unconscious. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of the Monkey knife fighter hut

When a pickpocket attempt fails either by not knocking the monkeys out or through a general fail of pickpocketing, you will be hit for 60 life points so bringing some food for this task is advisable for players with lower life points. There is also a chance you may be thrown in jail while pickpocketing without first knocking the monkeys out.

Once you have the 6 Monkey knives, head back to the colony. Talk to the three wise monkeys and they will now state that they are happy with their colony. Head back to Senliten's tomb and you will see a cutscene involving Osman, Leela and Senliten. After the cutscene, speak to Senliten and ask her what is wrong. She will tell you to head back to the colony quickly.

Part 6:
Wrecked and ruined

Step 1
Travel to monkey colony
Make a Cramulet
Speak with the monkey ghost

Items required: armour (with high Magic defence), food (Monkfish or better), Prayer potions, melee/Ranged weapon, Facemask/Slayer helmet, M'speak amulet, Ghostspeak amulet, desert survival gear (optional), Coins (for carpet rides)/Slayer ring, fighting/beast of burden familiar, teleportation tablet

Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a monkey ghost in the colony Make your way back to the colony by walking there as the carpet route will not be available at this point. Upon arriving at the camp, you will find corpses of monkeys and the colony set on fire and ruined. Search one of the corpses and a monkey ghost will appear. You cannot converse with it since it is both a ghost and a monkey. Use your M'speak amulet with your Ghostspeak amulet to make a Cramulet which combines the two amulets.

Speak to the monkey ghost and he will tell you that all the monkeys in the colony were murdered but the three wise monkeys were taken elsewhere by 'masked creatures'. He will tell you that the first was taken to the well in Pollnivneach and that he will search for the other two. In order to rescue the first monkey, you will have to fight Leeuni, a level 165 boss located in the area where you fought the Banshee mistress in the Smoking Kills quest.

Step 2
Go to Pollnivneach's smokey well dungeon
Fight Leeuni

You should now go to a bank and prepare for the fight. This boss is not to be underestimated as it can easily hit 300s with its Magic attack if your Prayer drops during the fight and also has a fierce melee attack, so do not risk anything which you are not prepared to lose. If you do happen to die during this fight however, your items will appear on the surface next to well, making it easy to get back to them with the use of an Amulet of glory or Ring of slaying. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a player battling Leeuni

Using Magic protection prayers will not make you completley immune from its attacks; however, they will lessen the damage recieved by a great deal, so keep your Prayer switched on during the fight. Familars are allowed to be brought into the battle so bring a familar that can store food for you if you wish.

Tip: You can also bring a Spirit kyatt and use its Ambush special move in order to take down Leeuni's life points much faster.

One of Leeuni's attacks is the ability to take off your helmet during the fight. If your helmet gets removed, wait for a few seconds before equipping it again, otherwise if you do this too quickly, you will be damaged for 300 life points. Try not to leave it unequipped for too long because the smoke in the well will damage you for around 100 life points repeatedly. It should be noted that if you try to keep your inventory full in order to prevent your helmet from being removed, you will simply be dealt 300 life points of damage instead.

After you have defeated Leeuni, talk to Iwazaru who will take you back to the colony.

Part 7:
Attack of Ayuni

Step 1
Go to the Kalphite Queen's lair
Fight Ayuni

Items required: Rope (bring 2 if you haven't been to the Kalphite Queen's lair before), Ranged armour (e.g. Dragonhide), Ranged weapon and ammunition (e.g. crossbow and bolts), food, Ranged potion (Optional but advised), Cramulet, Prayer potions, Antipoison potion, teleportation tablet

Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a map revealing the entrance to Ayuni's chamber Talk to the ghost monkey again and he will tell you that he has located another monkey within the Kalphite Lair. Head to a bank and prepare for the next boss, Ayuni, who is located in a room located on the north wall of the Kalphite Queen's chamber. You will need to bring 2 coils of Rope if you have not attached them to the lair's tunnel entrances before.

The Kalphite Lair entrance is located directly west of the Shantay Pass entrance in the desert. Make your way through the lair's tunnel and head down the second hole into the Kalphite Queen's chamber. You may wish to rest before doing so as you will have to run past the Kalphite Queen momentarily. Once you enter the chamber, run towards the north-west corner with a Magic protection Prayer activated.

After you enter, prepare to battle Ayuni. She uses Ranged and melee attacks, although if you are further away from her, she will use her Ranged attack and slowly walk towards you. Because of this, you should use protect from missles/Deflect missiles during the fight. Do not let her get close to you as she will use her melee attack which deals extreme amounts of damage. Ayuni will also teleport towards you many times during the fight. When she does, you should run away quickly to avoid it's melee attack. A strategy would be to run towards a corner then attack with Ranged until she teleports, then run away towards the next corner and repeat. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a player battling Ayuni

If you start the battle with a crossbow and Ruby bolts (e), attack her until she has around 2/3 of her health remaining. At this point, it's advised to switch to another type of bolt such as Adamant bolts or Diamond bolts (e). It is possible to use Ice spells to freeze Ayuni, but it will be frozen for a far shorter duration than normal. Due to the time it remains frozen being so short in comparison, it is not advised to try this method.

Please note that once you have defeated Ayuni, you need to be careful to not click away from the cutscene. As of 3rd December, there is a coding glitch which causes you to be moved back to the Kalphite queen's chamber should you click away from the scene. In the time it takes for the screen to re-appear from it's black fade, the Kalphite queen may have enough time to kill you, so be very cautious during this cutscene. After, talk to Mizaru to return to the colony.

Part 8:
Battle with Eruni

Step 1
Go to the Ruins of Uzer
Fight Eruni

Items required: armour (with high Magic defence), melee/Ranged weapon, Prayer potions, food, fighting/beast of burden familiar, teleportation tablet, Cramulet

Once again, speak to the monkey ghost and he will tell you that the last wise monkey is being kept through the demonic portal in the Ruins of Uzer (where you fought Agrith-Naar in the Shadow of the Storm quest). The nearest bank to Uzer is the one in Nardah, so restock your equipment there and make your way to the Ruins of Uzer. You will now have to fight the third and final boss, Eruni. Zybez Runescape Help's screenshot of a player battling Eruni and summoned Lesser demons

She uses Ranged and Magic attacks, but mostly uses Magic only due to being immobile, so using Magic protection Prayers here is strongly advised as it will nullify most of the damage from her attacks. During the fight, Eruni will remain in the centre of the room. She will also summon level 81 Lesser demons which will need to be killed as Eruni will be invulnerable to your attacks while they are still alive. Once she reaches 3/4 health, she will summon 2 demons. At 1/2 health, she will summon three, and finally at 1/4 health she will summon four.

You may choose between Ranged and melee, although the battle is easier with a melee combat style. During the fight, whenever Eruni summons Lesser demons, you should hide behind the pillars in the room to avoid her magical attacks while you are fighting them. Sometimes you may not be able to lure them around the pillars, so be prepared to take a fair amount of damage if this happens. It may be effective to once again use Ruby bolts (e) as with Eruni having around 5,000 life points, activating its special effect can make it hit around 850 life points.

Once you have finished the fight, talk to Kikazaru and you will both head back to the colony. Talk to the three wise monkeys and you will enter a cutscene where you will meet and talk to Apmeken. After this, make your way back to Senliten to complete the quest.
