Runecrafting, often abbreviated as RC, is a free-to-play skill that allows players to create their very own runes. The concept is simple and easy to grasp, and is extremely profitable in the long run. This guide will explain everything you need to know about Runecrafting, as well as how to turn yourself into a better runecrafter. Generally, the skill is very slow to train, but having a high Runecrafting level will allow you to make hundreds of thousands, upwards to the millions.
Runes are used to cast spells using the Magic skill. Every spell requires a different combination of runes to be able to cast it, and some of them need multiple runes to cast.
The only requirement to start the Runecrafting skill is the completion of the Rune Mysteries quest. This quest begins on the second floor of Lumbridge Castle, by speaking with Duke Horacio. After you complete that quest, you will receive a free Air talisman, as well as access to the Rune essence mine. It is here that you can begin your training of the Runecrafting skill.
After you have completed the Rune Mysteries quest, you can talk to any one of these wizards, and they will teleport you to the Rune essence mine free of charge. To get there quicker, they have a right-click option to "Teleport", which makes them teleport you without any dialogue.
- Sedridor - Basement of the Wizard's Tower
- Aubury - Varrock Rune shop (closest to bank - F2P)
- Wizard Cromperty - East Ardougne
- Wizard Distentor - The head of the Wizards' Guild (closest to bank - P2P)
- Brimstail - The hollowed rock in the south-west part of the Tree Gnome Stronghold.
There is a difference between Rune essence and Pure essence. Rune essence can only be used to craft Air, Earth, Water, Fire, Mind, and Body runes, while Pure essence can be used to craft any rune. Rune essence is obtained either on free-play worlds or on members-only worlds with under level 30 Mining. When you are on a members-only world and have 30 Mining or above, you will automatically mine Pure essence.
Talismans can be either used to enter different Mysterious ruins scattered across the world, binded with Tiaras, or a Talisman staff from Great Orb Project, The activity. The talismans can be acquired from monster drops, players, Grand Exchange, or from Great Orb Project, The.
Every altar requires a specific talisman to enter. There are two talismans which aren't specific to one altar: The Elemental talisman is used for the four elemental altars (Air, Earth, Water, and Fire), and the Omni-talisman is used to gain access to every altar.

Did you know, the Soul talisman and Soul tiara was formerly listed in the Knowledge Base? It disappeared with the release of the Ourania Altar. It was never available ingame.
Tiaras can be bound with a talisman; these bound tiaras are used as a faster and more efficient way to runecraft. Simply wear the tiara, take your essence to the mysterious ruins, and left click them to gain access to the altar.
To make a tiara, make a plain silver Tiara with a Silver bar and Tiara mould (Rimmington or Al Kharid crafting stores, or for free in the Crafting Guild), make your way to a furnace and use the Silver bar on it to make a Tiara. Once you have crafted a plain Tiara, you must take it, along with a talisman of its respective Runecrafting altar, and use either item with the altar to bind them. Once you bind the talisman with a tiara, the talisman will disappear, so one talisman is needed per tiara made.
There are currently thirteen types of Tiaras in the game, with the Soul tiara yet to be added. Cosmic, Chaos, Nature, Death, Law, Blood, and Omni-tiaras are members' only. The Omni-tiara is special, as it is a combination of all of the talismans; to create an Omni-tiara, speak to Wizard Korvak in the Runecrafting Guild. When you bind a Tiara with a talisman, you will gain five times the Runecrafting experience than you would by crafting the rune. This is shown in the table below:
There are a total of 14 different Altars located all over Runescape. Every altar, with the exception of the Ourania and Astral altar, is hidden in ruins which you need a specific talisman or tiara to enter. Each altar can be located by right-clicking your talisman and choosing to "Locate". It will inform you of which direction it's being pulled towards, giving a general idea of the location of the altar. The Omni-talisman and Elemental talisman cannot give you a location since they are used for multiple altars.
Below shows the locations of every Altar, and the average banking times from each Altar location measured in seconds.

The process of crafting runes is rather simple. You require either Rune or Pure essence, with Rune essence to craft only Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Mind, and Body runes; Pure essence is used to craft all runes.
Once at an altar, simply choose to craft your runes by left-clicking on the altar. This will automatically convert all essence in your inventory into the rune that correspond with the altar.
As you progress with Runecrafting, you will find that you will be able to craft more than one rune per essence. For example, you are able to craft one Air rune per essence with level 1 Runecrafting, but at level 11, you will be able to craft them at a guaranteed rate of two per essence.
You will also have a chance of crafting multiple runes from essence between these level gaps. For example, Nature runes can be crafted at level 44 runecrafting, and you are able to craft two Nature runes per pure essence at level 91. Between level 44 and 91 Runecrafting, you will have a chance of crafting two Nature runes per essence, with this chance increasing as your level gets closer to 91.

*This is a reachable but untested multiplier level. With three doses of Evil Dave's Orange Spice in a stew, some luck, and level 99 Runecrafting, this can be reached.
As the name states, combination runes are a combination of two elemental runes. To create these, runes of the two elements to combine will be needed, as well as pure essence and a talisman to use up. For each combination rune, there is a 50% chance of succeeding in creating it.
To make the combination runes, you will need to travel to an altar with an element that corresponds to one of your stack of runes, while the talisman will need to be of an element of your other stack of runes. For example, to make Mist runes, you will have a stack of Water and Air runes, and you will need to go to either the Water altar with an Air talisman, or to the Air altar with a Water talisman. Additionally, you will receive a different amount of experience based on which one you choose.
A Binding necklace will allow a 100% success rate in creating these runes, and has 15 charges. 1 charge will be used whenever combination rune(s) are made, and will disappear after all of the charges have been used up. The Magic Imbue spell from the Lunar spellbook will provide a 100% success rate for making combination runes and will also allow the runes to be created without the need for a talisman. The effect will last for 15 seconds.

The Ourania Cave holds one of the strongest altars in RuneScape: the Zamorak Mage Institute (ZMI) altar. This altar is only available to members and is most useful for players who wish to power-train. At this altar, you will receive double the normal experience per rune you craft. However, the runes you craft will be of a random assortment of any rune. The better your Runecrafting level, the better your chance is of receiving high-level runes. There is still the usual chance of creating multiple runes at this altar.
When Runecrafting here, there is a long and a short path from the cave entrance to the altar. The short path has Zamorak mages, Zamorak rangers, and Zamorak warriors that attack you upon entering (turning on Protect from Missles when running in is recommended), whereas the long path is completely safe.
You will also notice the occasional Zamorak crafter while using the short path; they will not attack you but will drop Runecrafting supplies if you kill them. There is also a banker at the entrance of the cave, but he charges 20 of any rune each time you open your bank.
The cave entrance is located south-west of West Ardougne, and west of the Battlefield of the Khazard and Gnomes. One of the fastest and easiest ways to get to this cave is by using Lunar magic and using the Ourania teleport, where you can then walk to the altar and teleport back to a bank.

The Abyss is one of the best methods for Runecrafting. In order to gain access to the Abyss, you must have completed the Abyss miniquest (Abyss, The) for the Zamorak mage. Upon completion, you will be rewarded with 1,000 Runecrafting experience, and also be granted access to the Abyss. To enter the Abyss, you must travel to the Zamorak mage who resides just north of Edgeville, by the river around level 5 Wilderness.
While using the Abyss, it is important to wear armour that provides good protection against all attacks. It is also important that you are able to keep running to avoid as much damage as possible. Typically there are two different setups for Runecrafting with the Abyss; a setup that provides high Defence, but also weighs a lot. There is also a setup that provides very low weight, helpful for a lot of running, but has relatively low Defence in comparison.
Information for the items worn/equipped for the high Defence attire can be found here, and the information for the light weight attire can be found here.
Note: The light weight attire requires 92 Firemaking and at least 80 Agility. It is often used by more experienced players. Both set ups are only suggestions; items worn can be changed if need be.
When in the Abyss, the most common obstacle to appear are the rocks, which require a pickaxe. In both, the inventory has been set up with an Amulet of glory in the top corner surrounded by Runecrafting pouches. This is to effectively reduce the time spent clicking, and can be altered if players would rather wear the amulets.
An Abyssal familiar can be very useful as they will all store up to 7 Rune/Pure essence. More information on the Familiars can be found here.
There are different types of obstacles in the abyss that can be overcome, each with their own methods of bypassing. This table will explain what each obstacle requires to pass them.
|Obstacle||Tactic (Skill)||Item required|
|Gap||Squeeze through (Agility)||None|
|Boil||Burn down (Firemaking)||Tinderbox|
|Blockage||You can't go through||N/A|
Once inside the inner area, you will notice different rifts. They teleport you directly inside the respective altars, e.g. the Nature rift takes you inside the Nature altar. From here, you can teleport to any altar and create your runes from your essence.
Note that the restrictions for entering the Law altar are the same as the ones applied to entry to Entrana, so no weapons, armour, familiars, etc. are allowed. You also cannot enter an altar if you don't have access to it by conventional means, so if, for example, if you haven't done the Lost City quest to gain access to the Cosmic altar, you can't get there through the Abyss.
Pouches can be obtained in two ways; the first is killing Abyssal creatures, with the exception of Abyssal demons. Large and Giant pouches can also be bought from Wizard Korvak in the Runecrafting guild from the price of 25,000gp for the Large pouch, and 50,000gp for the Giant pouch.
After a certain amount of uses, Runecrafting pouches will begin to degrade and eventually disappear unless they are repaired. This can be done in four ways: Visiting the Dark mage in the Abyss; he will repair any damaged pouches for free; using the NPC contact spell from the Lunar Spellbook to contact the Dark mage, this will also repair any damaged pouches for free; Wizard Korvak will also repair the Large and Giant pouches at a small cost: 9,000gp for the Large pouch, and 12,000gp for the Giant pouch. For the players who have gained at least 139,760 points at Livid Farm, they can cast the Repair Rune Pouch spell to repair their pouches.
|Small pouch||3 essence||1|
|Medium pouch||6 essence||25|
|Large pouch||9 essence||50|
|Giant pouch||12 essence||75|
|Massive pouch||18 essence||90|
The Elemental talisman is a fairly common drop from the various creatures that are encountered in the Abyss. Its purpose is to allow access to the elemental altars, being Air, Water, Earth and Fire. They can not be infused with a Tiara or Runecrafting staff, so by crafting runes using the elemental talisman, one inventory space is taken up. The only advantage in using this is convenience, due to not needing to remember which tiara or talisman to bring to an altar.
Great Orb Project, The is a Runecrafting minigame. The entry point is located in the Runecrafting guild, which requires level 50 Runecrafting to enter, and can be started by talking either to Wizard Acantha to join the green team, Wizard Vief to join the yellow team, or one of the other wizards around the guild to join one of the two teams randomly.
Rewards are purchased from Wizard Elriss using the tokens received from the minigame. These can be very rewarding, and some of the items that can be bought here are exclusive only to the Runecrafting Guild. Highlights include the teleportation tablets which take a player directly outside an altar. This is the only store that sells talismans and talisman staves, using Runecrafting guild tokens as currency.

Runecrafting is a lengthy skill, but there are ways to speed it up, either by increasing the amount of runes you can craft at an altar per trip by using Summoning familiars, or increasing the experience you receive per essence with the use of gloves.
Here, you can find out what Items and familiars can help you with Runecrafting. Also, you can find the best methods for training Runecrafting here.
There are four familiars that can help you with Runecrafting: Abyssal familiars will all store seven Rune essence/Pure essence, and also have additional effects. Abyssal familiars do have a downside: they all have a short timer, so be sure to have extra pouches and a way of restoring your Summoning points. Spirit Graahk will hold no essence, but will teleport you to the Horned graahk hunting area west of the Nature altar.
|Name||Summoning level||Essence stored||Familiar ability|
|Abyssal parasite||54||7||Holds 7 rune/pure essence. Slows the drain of prayer when in the Abyss.|
|Spirit graahk||57||0||Teleports to the Graahk hunting area west of the Nature altar.|
|Abyssal lurker||62||7||Holds 7 rune/pure essence.|
|Abyssal titan||93||7||Holds 7 rune/pure essence. Scroll allows for all held rune/ pure essence to be sent to the bank.|
Runecrafting gloves can be bought from the Fist of Guthix minigame. When worn, they will double the experience you receive from crafting runes, provided you are at the altar that corresponds to the gloves that you are wearing.
|Air runecrafting gloves||10 Runecrafting|
|Water runecrafting gloves||20 Runecrafting|
|Earth runecrafting gloves||30 Runecrafting|
In the early levels, the only runes you will be able to craft are Air runes. The Air talisman you get as a reward from the Rune Mysteries quest will grant you access to the first altar you will go to: The Air Altar, which is where you will start Runecrafting. Crafting Air runes will be the fastest and least costing option until you reach level 5 Runecrafting.
At this point crafting at the Water altar will become more cost efficient method for Runecrafting up until around level 14. The difference of experience between Water runes and Earth runes is only 0.5, but crafting Water runes will cost less than crafting Earth runes.
The Water altar is located in the middle of Lumbridge swamp, and the best bank to use is the one at Draynor Village bank as it is the closest one. A Water talisman is required to access the altar.
From here on, crafting Fire runes will be the best option for free-players. It does, however, result in a larger loss per essence crafted. The upshot, however, is the distance between the bank at the Duel Arena in Al Kharid is relatively short, so you will be able to craft more Fire runes per hour.
The benefit of membership is that you will gain access to many more Runecrafting altars, and you will therefore be able to craft more types of runes that are generally more expensive than the ones available only to free-players.
When you carry on training until you reach level 27 Runecrafting, you will able to craft Cosmic runes after you have completed the Lost City quest which grants access to Zanaris. This altar is considerably distanced from the nearest bank, but contains three separate paths which will reduce walking distance depending on your Agility level. You can also use the Abyss to reduce time between trips.
You may wish to craft Chaos runes once you reach level 35 Runecrafting, but unless you use the Abyss to craft them, it is not recommended that you craft them since the route to the actual altar is long and confusing. Also, Chaos runes are worth a lot less than Cosmic runes.
This method requires the Lunar Diplomacy quest to be complete.
Astral runes are one of the best runes to craft, even up to 99 Runecrafting. The distance to the bank is short, and you will also be able to teleport back to the bank on Lunar isle while on the Lunar spellbook with level 69 Magic.
Be sure to wear armour to protect yourself against the Suqahs, which will attack you as you travel to the altar.
Crafting Nature runes is the most common method for training Runecrafting due to the profit, speed, and lack of quest requirements in order to craft them. The best methods of travel to use are either: the Abyss, Fair Rings or using a Spirit Graahk. Using the Fairy Ring method, from Edgeville run to the east and then enter the code CKR, then run to the Nature Altar. Use an Amulet of Glory to return to Edgeville and repeat. Using the Spirit graahk method, it will teleport you to the Graahk hunting area, west of the Nature altar and require items such as an Amulet of Glory or Ring of duelling to teleport you back to a bank. A Nature talisman or Nature tiara will also be required to enter the ruins for both the Fairy Ring Method and the Spirit Graahk method.
This method requires the Mourning's Ends part II quest to be complete.
This method is generally uncommon due to the requirements in order to craft Death runes, but it results in a good profit. There are two main ways to craft Death runes: the Abyss, and the Death altar teleport tablets; the quicker method is the tablets once they are gathered in bulk. If the time required to gather a large enough amount is taken into account, the Abyss remains the best method to use.
There are no level requirements for this altar as it will craft any rune, but in order to make the most out of this method, 50+ Runecrafting is recommended.
The Ourania cave (ZMI altar) allows for, overall, the fastest method for gaining Runecrafting experience, since you will receive double the normal experience for any rune you craft per Pure essence. However, the runes that you receive will be completely random. At higher levels, you will receive more high-level runes, which will in turn increase the overall experience per trip.
There are three methods for using this altar: using the long path to craft runes using the bank at the start, taking the short path between the banker and the altar, and using the Lunar spellbook to teleport yourself above the cave and running through the short/ long path to the altar. The long path has no aggressive monsters that will attack you, but the time taken to reach the altar is comparably longer than the short path.
Using the bank will cost 20 of any rune per access, so bring a large amount of an inexpensive rune if you wish to use the bank. One example of this would be the Fire rune, which is pretty cheap.
Runespan is a place for Runecrafters of any level to train. It requires no items, not even rune essence, rune essence is collected at Runespan. At the higher levels your experience rates can reach 100k per hour, and it is currently the fastest method for any level. See the Runespan guide for more information.
A: No. Non-Members can only craft Air, Mind, Water, Earth, Fire and Body Runes. Although you can access the outside of the Chaos Altar, the Chaos talisman and tiara are a members' object. Note that only Pure essence can craft the runes that are only available to members.
A: No. Experience is calculated per essence crafted, not per rune made.
A: Yes, but only at the Ourania Altar. Additionally, the chance of producing them is random. The amount of Soul runes made at Ourania Altar is connected to your Runecrafting level; the higher Runecrafting level you have the more change of a higher amount. However, a Soul altar may be implemented in the future, as there are already portals made for Soul altar in Abyss, although you can't use it.
A: Yes, with the release of the Legacy of Seergaze quest, it is now possible for Members to craft Blood runes.
A: That is the glider first used when you start the quest. The crash site is located at the Jogre spawn. However, the location you glide to would be further south.
A: Yes, they can. Pure essence can be used by both Members and Free players, however only Members can mine it.
A: The more you have, the better. It takes approximately 110 seconds to make a successful trip through the Abyss. You can last for about an hour in the Abyss with 10 glory amulets before having to recharge them. Having 10 plus amulets will be most effective.
A: At 91 runecrafting you gain the ability to craft double nature runes per essence. This method makes people over a million gp per hour, and is what every runecrafter aspires for.
A: In simple terms, they double the Runecrafting experience you get. After crafting 1000 essence, they crumble to dust. See Section 8.2 of this guide to find out more information.
A: A Runecrafting staff from the Runecrafting Guild can function like a tiara, allowing you to enter an altar without wasting an inventory space. They can also be used to distract the eyes in the Abyss. The Explorer's ring (2) and (3) from the Lumbridge/Draynor Achievement Diary gives a 10% chance per essence used of creating an extra elemental rune.
